Welcome to the Unit 5 Review! In this unit, you learned three big ideas: there is / there are, prepositions of place, and rooms of a house.

First, look at there is and there are:

Form Example
There is There is a bed.
There are There are two beds.

Use there is for one thing. Use there are for two or more things.

Next, prepositions of place tell us where things are: in, on, under, next to, behind, between, and in front of. For example: "The cat is under the table." or "The TV is next to the sofa."

Finally, you learned rooms of a house: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, dining room, garden, and balcony.

Your writing task: Describe your home. Write 4–5 sentences about your house or apartment. Say what rooms you have and where things are.

Using 'and': Use the word and to join two ideas. "There is a kitchen and a living room." Try to use 'and' two or three times in your writing.

There is و There are

الاتنين بيستخدموا لما تحب تقول إن حاجة موجودة في مكان معين. الفرق بينهم في العدد:

  • There is بنستخدمها لما الحاجة تكون واحدة أو حاجة مش بنعدّها. مثلاً: "There is a sofa in the living room" (في كنبة في الصالة).
  • There are بنستخدمها لما الحاجات تكون اتنين أو أكتر. مثلاً: "There are two chairs in the kitchen" (في كرسيين في المطبخ).

Prepositions of Place

دي كلمات بتوضح فين بالظبط الحاجة. اتعلمت منهم:

  • in = جوا أو في (The TV is in the bedroom)
  • on = فوق (The book is on the table)
  • under = تحت (The cat is under the chair)
  • next to = جنب (The lamp is next to the bed)
  • behind = ورا (The garden is behind the house)
  • between = بين (The table is between the two chairs)
  • in front of = قدام (The balcony is in front of the kitchen)

أسماء الغرف بالإنجليزي

  • bedroom = أوضة النوم
  • bathroom = الحمام
  • kitchen = المطبخ
  • living room = الصالة
  • dining room = أوضة السفرة
  • garden = الجنينة
  • balcony = البلكونة

مهمة الكتابة – Describe your home

دلوقتي المطلوب منك تكتب ٤ أو ٥ جمل عن بيتك أو شقتك. قول إيه الغرف اللي عندك، واوصف الحاجات اللي في كل أوضة باستخدام prepositions of place. ومهم جداً تحاول تربط جملك بكلمة and مرتين أو تلات مرات عشان الكلام يطلع مترابط وطبيعي. مثال: "There is a kitchen and a living room. The sofa is next to the table and the TV is in front of the sofa."

PREPARE — Gather your ideas.

Before you write, think about your home. Ask yourself:

  • What rooms are in your home? (bedroom, kitchen, bathroom...)
  • How many bedrooms? How many bathrooms?
  • What is in your living room?
  • Where is the TV? Where is the sofa?

Write your ideas in your notebook. You will use them in the next step.

WRITE — Describe your home.

Write 4–5 sentences about your home. Use:

  • There is and There are
  • Prepositions of place: in, on, under, next to, behind, between, in front of
  • The word 'and' to join two ideas

Example: 'There is a kitchen and a living room. There are two bedrooms. The sofa is next to the window.'

REVIEW — Check your writing.

Read your sentences. Check the boxes:

  • ✓ Did I start each sentence with a capital letter?
  • ✓ Did I use there is for one thing and there are for two or more?
  • ✓ Did I use a preposition of place (in, on, under, next to...)?
  • ✓ Did I use and to join two ideas?
  • ✓ Did I end each sentence with a period (.)?
