Welcome to the Unit 9 review! In this lesson, we look back at three big ideas from the unit: body parts, the verbs have and has, and the advice words should and shouldn't.

Body parts are the words for parts of your body. You learned: head, eye, ear, nose, mouth, tooth (teeth), arm, hand, leg, foot (feet), back, and stomach. We use body parts to say where we feel pain.

Have and has mean "to own" or "to feel something in the body." Look at the table:

Subject Verb Example
I / you / we / they have I have a headache.
he / she / it has She has a cold.

Should and shouldn't give advice. Should means "this is a good idea." Shouldn't means "this is not a good idea." For example: You should see a doctor. You shouldn't eat too much candy.

For the writing task, you write a short email to a doctor. Tell the doctor what is wrong, where it hurts, and what you should do. Remember to use a capital letter at the start of every sentence.

الكلمات دي بتستخدمها لما تقولي "إيه اللي بيوجعني"، مثلاً: My back hurts (ضهري بيوجعني) أو I have a stomachache (معدتي بتوجعني).

الفعل have و has الاتنين معنى واحد بس بنستخدمهم مع أشخاص مختلفين:

  • have مع: I, you, we, they
  • has مع: he, she, it

ومهم جداً تعرف إن have/has مش بس بمعنى "عندك حاجة تملكها"، لكن كمان بنستخدمهم لما نتكلم عن إحساس جسدي. أمثلة:

  • I have a headache (عندي صداع)
  • She has a cold (هي عندها برد)
  • He has a toothache (هو عنده وجع سنان)

Should و Shouldn't الاتنين بنستخدمهم لما ندي نصيحة:

  • Should = "المفروض تعمل كده"، يعني الفكرة كويسة
  • Shouldn't = "ما تعملش كده"، يعني الفكرة وحشة

أمثلة:

  • You should see a doctor (المفروض تروح لدكتور)
  • You shouldn't eat too much candy

Read this advice to your friend. Speak clearly and slowly.

You should see a doctor.

PREPARE — Before you write, think about these questions:

1) What is wrong with you? (I have a ) 2) What part of your body hurts? (My ___ hurts) 3) What should you do? (I should )

Write three short notes with your ideas. You can use these words: • Aches: headache, stomachache, cold, toothache, backache • Body parts: head, stomach, back, tooth, leg, arm • Advice: see a doctor, rest, drink water, take medicine

WRITE — Now write a short email to Dr. Lee. Start with 'Dear Dr. Lee,' and end with 'Thank you, [your name].' Use 4–5 sentences. Try to use have or has, should, and at least two body part words.

Example: Dear Dr. Lee, I have a headache and a stomachache. My head hurts and my stomach hurts. I should rest and drink water. Should I take medicine? Thank you, Anna.

REVIEW — Read your email again. Check these things:

1) Did you start every sentence with a capital letter? 2) Did you use have with I / you / we / they and has with he / she / it? 3) Did you use should to give advice? 4) Did you write at least two body part words? 5) Did you write your name at the end?

If yes to all — great work! Your email is ready for the doctor.
