Now you know the names of eight common sports. In this section you will learn how to say which sports you like, which sports you do not like, and which sport is your favourite. You will hear a short conversation, then you will practise saying the sentences yourself. By the end you will be able to talk about sport with a friend in English.

Here are some useful phrases.

English phrase When to use it
I like football. to say you enjoy a sport
I don't like running. to say you do not enjoy a sport
My favourite sport is tennis. to name your top sport
I play basketball at school. to say where or when you do a sport
I go swimming at the weekend. to talk about swimming, running, cycling
Do you like volleyball? to ask a friend about a sport
Yes, I do. / No, I don't. short answers

When we talk about a sport we like or don't like, we use the name of the sport. When we talk about playing a sport, we say play + sport for ball sports and racquet sports, and go + -ing for swimming, running and cycling. Listen to the dialogue and notice the questions and short answers. Then you will record the same kind of sentences yourself, and finally have a short conversation with Tom about sport.

  • I like football —
  • I don't like running —
  • My favourite sport is tennis —
  • I play basketball at school —
  • I go swimming at the weekend —
  • Do you like volleyball? —
  • Yes, I do / No, I don't —

الفرق بين like و play و go

I like tennis.

I play football every Saturday.
I go swimming at the weekend.

مع أسئلة Do you… بنجاوب بـ Yes, I do أو No, I don't.

I don't like running, though. Running is hard.

  • Emma: Hi Tom! Do you like sport?
  • Tom: Yes, I do. I love football. What about you?
  • Emma: I like tennis. It's my favourite sport.
  • Tom: Do you play tennis at school?
  • Emma: Yes, I do. I play every Saturday. I don't like running, though.
  • Tom: Me too! Running is hard.

Listen to this short conversation between Emma and Tom. They are talking about sport at break time.

  • I play football on Saturdays.
  • She plays tennis with her friends.
  • We play basketball after school.
  • I play volleyball at the beach.
  • We play badminton in the garden.

  • I go swimming in the summer.
  • He goes running every morning.
  • We go cycling in the park.

القاعدة دي مهمة جداً، لأن لو قلت "I play swimming" ده غلط — الصح "I go swimming".

  • Favourite: My favourite sport is football.
  • Like: I like tennis but I don't like running.
  • Love: I love swimming because it's relaxing.

شوف الجملة دي: "I like football, but I don't like running."
