Welcome to the Unit 2 Review! In this unit you learned how to talk about your hobbies and free-time activities. You can now say what you enjoy doing in your free time, and you know many common hobby words in English (UK).

First, let us look at the grammar again. In English, after verbs like enjoy, love, like and hate, we use the -ing form of the verb. We do not say "I enjoy to read" — we say "I enjoy reading." The same is true for love, like and hate. Look at these examples: "She loves swimming." "He hates cooking." "I like painting." This -ing form is also called a gerund.

We can also use like, love and hate with a noun (a thing or an activity), not only with a verb. For example: "I love chocolate." "He hates homework." So both forms work: I love reading and I love music.

Now let us check the hobby vocabulary. Common hobbies in English (UK) include: reading, swimming, cooking, painting, dancing, running, walking, shopping, travelling, writing, drawing, listening to music, watching films, playing football and playing video games.

For your writing task, you will write a short paragraph about your hobbies. Follow this plan: first PREPARE your ideas, then WRITE your paragraph, and finally REVIEW it to check your work.

Writing strategy: Using capital letters. Always start a sentence with a capital letter (I am happy. She is kind.). Also use a capital letter for the word "I" when you talk about yourself (I like music, not i like music).

مراجعة الوحدة التانية – الهوايات

يا أهلاً بيكوا تاني! في الوحدة دي اتعلمنا إزاي نتكلم عن هواياتنا والأشياء اللي بنعملها في وقت الفاضي. خلينا نراجع مع بعض أهم الحاجات.

القاعدة الأساسية: الـ -ing بعد الأفعال

في الإنجليزي، بعد الأفعال enjoy و love و like و hate، لازم نستخدم صيغة الـ -ing (وده اسمه gerund). يعني مش بنقول "I enjoy to read"، لأ، بنقول "I enjoy reading". نفس الكلام بالظبط مع love و like و hate:

  • She loves swimming. (هي بتحب السباحة)
  • He hates cooking. (هو بيكره الطبخ)
  • I like painting. (أنا بحب الرسم)
  • My sister hates shopping, but she loves painting. (أختي بتكره التسوق، بس بتحب الرسم)

الأفعال دي ممكن تيجي مع اسم برضو

كمان، الأفعال دي زي like و love و hate بنستخدمها مع noun (اسم) مش بس مع verb. يعني الاتنين صح:

  • I love reading. (أنا بحب القراءة)
  • I love music.

وكمان كلمة "I" لازم تفضل capital في كل جملة، يعني بنقول "I like music" مش "i like music".

يلا بينا نبدأ بالكروت وبعدين نكتب!

PREPARE — gather your ideas. Before you write, think about these questions:

• What hobbies do I do in my free time? • How often do I do them? (every day, often, sometimes, never) • What do I love doing? What do I hate doing? • Who do I do my hobbies with? (alone, with friends, with family)

Write 3–4 short notes in English (UK). For example:

  • reading — every evening
  • cooking — on Saturday
  • running — I love it!
  • shopping — I hate it

Now you are ready to write.

WRITE — your task. Write a short paragraph (5–7 sentences) about your hobbies. Use the notes from PREPARE. Try to use: • like / love / hate + -ingenjoy + -ing • frequency words: every day, often, sometimes, never • conjunctions: and, but, because

Example: "In my free time, I enjoy reading books and listening to music. I love cooking on Saturday because I like making food for my family. My brother hates running, but I love it. I sometimes play football with my friends. I never enjoy shopping!"

REVIEW — check your writing. Read your paragraph again and check:

  1. Capital letters — does every sentence start with a capital letter? Is "I" always capital?
  2. -ing form — after enjoy / like / love / hate, did you use the -ing form? (not to read)
  3. Spelling — is each hobby word correct? (swimming, cooking, painting)
  4. Sentences — does every sentence have a subject and a verb?
  5. Punctuation — is there a full stop at the end of each sentence?

If you can say yes to all of these, your work is great! If not, change a few things and read it again.
