Now you know the names of different programmes. In this section you will learn how to say what you like watching.

The most useful sentence pattern is "I like watching..." You can put any programme type after it. For example: I like watching comedies. You can also say "I love..." when something is your favourite, and "I don't like..." when you don't enjoy something. To ask a friend about their taste, say: "What do you like watching?" or "Do you like films?"

In British English people often use "My favourite film is..." or "My favourite programme is..." You can also use "I prefer... to..." to compare two things: I prefer dramas to comedies. This is a polite way to say one is better for you.

Listen to the dialogue between Emma and Tom. They talk about films, TV and channels. Then you will record your own sentences and have a short chat about films and TV. Try to use the phrases in the table — they will help you in the roleplay at the end of this section.

You can talk about films and TV in many situations: with friends at school, with colleagues at work, or on social media. Saying what you like watching is a great way to start a conversation in English. People often recommend programmes to each other, and you can recommend one too. Try to use the phrases below every day this week when you speak English.

English
I like watching...
I love...
I don't like...
My favourite film is...
What do you like watching?
I prefer dramas to comedies.

أهم pattern في الدرس ده هو "I like watching...". يعني "أنا بحب مشاهدة...". وبعدها بتحط أي نوع برنامج أو فيلم. مثلاً:

  • I like watching documentaries (أنا بحب الأفلام الوثائقية)
  • I like watching comedies (أنا بحب الكوميديا)
  • I like watching dramas (أنا بحب الدراما)

الـ watching دي مهمة جدًا، لأن ممكن تقول I like films وده كمان صح، بس لما تيجي تقول إنت بتتفرج على نوع معين، استخدمها.

درجات التفضيل

في عندنا 3 مستويات عشان تقول رأيك بوضوح:

  • I don't like... لما يكون حاجة مش عاجبتك خالص
  • I like... لما تكون حاجة كويسة
  • I love... لما تكون الحاجة دي من الحاجات المفضلة عندك

Tom في الحوار بيقول I love action films، وده بيورّي إن الأكشن عنده في القمة.

إزاي تقارن بين حاجتين

لو عايز تقول حاجة أحسن من التانية، استخدم "I prefer... to...". Emma بتقول I prefer dramas to documentaries، يعني هي بتحب الدراما أكتر من الوثائقيات. الـ prefer دي مؤدبة وشيك.

إزاي تسأل صاحبك

عشان تفتح الموضوع مع حد:

  • Do you like watching films?
  • What do you like watching on TV?
  • What's your favourite channel?

الإجابات الطبيعية تبدأ بـ Yes, I do أو My favourite is... عشان تخلي الكلام ماشي بسلاسة.

ملحوظة على British English

في الإنجليزي البريطاني بيقولوا My favourite film is... أو My favourite programme is... بدل ما يقولوا movie. اتعوّد على الـ spelling ده لأنه هو اللي هتشوفه في بريطانيا.

متى تستخدم الكلام ده؟

  • مع صحابك في المدرسة أو الجامعة
  • مع زمايلك في البريك في الشغل
  • في أي مكان عايز تعمل صداقات جديدة

حاول تستخدم الجمل دي مرة كل يوم الأسبوع ده، وهتلاقيها بتطلع منك تلقائي بعد كذا مرة.

Listen to Emma and Tom talking about films and TV.

  1. E
Emma Hi Tom! Do you like watching films?
  2. T
Tom Yes, I do. I love action films.
  3. E
Emma My favourite is comedy. What do you like watching on TV?
  4. T
Tom I like watching documentaries at the weekend.
  5. E
Emma Great! I prefer dramas to documentaries.
  6. T
Tom Me too, sometimes. What's your favourite channel?

I like watching documentaries at the weekend.

Films and TV are a big part of daily life in the UK. On an average evening, millions of people in Britain sit down to watch a programme. There are many different types of programmes, and each one is for a different mood. In this lesson you will learn the names of the most common types, so you can say what you like to watch.

In British English, the most common types are film, comedy, drama, documentary, cartoon, news, series and channel. A film is a movie — usually about two hours long. A comedy makes you laugh. A drama tells a serious or emotional story. A documentary shows real people and real events, so you can learn about the world. A cartoon uses drawings or computer pictures, not real actors. The news tells you what is happening today in the UK and around the world. A series has many episodes, and the story continues from one episode to the next. A channel is one TV station — for example, BBC One, ITV or Channel 4.

You can put these words together to make simple sentences. For example: I watch the news on BBC One. or My favourite series is on Channel 4. Read the example sentences in the table out loud, then try the practice steps at the end of this section.

Most British homes have a TV, and many people also watch programmes on a laptop, tablet or phone. You can say I watch + programme type, or I like + programme type. For example: I watch a film on Friday night. or I like comedies.

Channel 4.

جُمل مفيدة من الدرس:

  • I like watching comedies on Channel 4. (بحب أتفرج على كوميديات على قناة 4)
  • I watch the news every evening. (بتفرج على الأخبار كل ليلة)
  • My favourite series is on BBC One. (مسلسلي المفضل على بي بي سي وان)

نمط مهم لازم تحفظه:

بتقدر تستخدم فعلين أساسيين مع الكلمات دي:

  • I watch + نوع البرنامج: I watch a film on Friday night.
  • I like + نوع البرنامج: I like documentaries.

ولاحظ الفرق: لما تتكلم عن حاجة عامة بنستخدم الكلمة لوحدها زي I like comedy، لكن لما نتكلم عن حاجة محددة بنحط a قبلها زي I watched a comedy last night. القاعدة دي هتساعدك تتكلم صح في مواقف كتير.
