Welcome to the Unit 7 Review! In this unit, we talked about life at home. We learned the names of everyday chores (jobs you do around the house), and we practised three important grammar points: have to for things that are necessary, imperatives for short instructions, and request language for asking people politely.

Chore vocabulary

have to / has to

We use have to to say something is necessary or part of a rule. Use have to with I / you / we / they, and has to with he / she / it. The negative is don't have to (or doesn't have to). For questions, use Do or Does: I have to study tonight. She has to work late. Do you have to go?

Imperatives

Imperatives are short instructions. We use the base verb with no subject: Tidy your room! Don't forget your keys! We add please to be polite: Please close the window.

Request language

To ask someone to do something politely, we use Can you…?, Could you…? or Would you mind + -ing…? Examples: Can you help me? Could you open the window? Would you mind closing the door?

Writing strategy: capital letters and full stops

Start every sentence with a capital letter (T, not t) and end every sentence with a full stop (.). This makes your writing clear and easy to read.

Writing task: five house rules

You are going to write five house rules for your home. Use imperatives, have to, and chore vocabulary. Example: Tidy your room every day. You have to do the dishes after dinner.

ملخص الوحدة السابعة: الحياة في البيت والشغلونات اليومية

الوحدة دي كانت عن البيت والمسؤوليات اللي بنعملها كل يوم. اتعلمنا كلمات الشغلونات (chores)، وكمان اتعلمنا تلات نقاط قواعد مهمة: have to وhas to، وimperatives، وrequest language.

أولاً: كلمات الشغلونات (Chore vocabulary)

  • do the dishes = تغسل الصحون. I do the dishes after dinner.
  • tidy your room = ترتب أوضتك. Please tidy your room.
  • take out the rubbish = تنزّل الزبالة. Take out the rubbish before 8 pm.
  • make the bed = ترتّب السرير. She makes her bed every morning.
  • vacuum the floor = تكنس الأرض بالمكنسة الكهربية. He vacuums the floor on Saturdays.
  • do the laundry = تغسل الهدوم. We do the laundry on Sunday.
  • feed the pet = تطعم الحيوان. They feed the cat twice a day.
  • set the table = تحضّر الترابيزة قبل الأكل. Set the table for four people.

ثانياً: قاعدة have to و has to

بنستخدم have to لما نحكي عن حاجة لازم تتعمل أو هي قاعدة في البيت أو الشغل. مع I, you, we, they بنقول have to، ومع he, she, it بنقول has to. النفي بيكون don't have to أو doesn't have to، والسؤال بيبدأ بـ Do أو Does.

أمثلة:

  • I have to study tonight. (لازم أدرس الليلة.)
  • She has to work late. (هي لازم تشتغل بالليل.)
  • Do you have to go? (لازم تروح؟)

ثالثاً: قاعدة Imperatives (الأوامر)

دي جمل قصيرة بنستخدمها لما ندي تعليمات سريعة. بنحط الفعل في صورته الأساسية من غير فاعل. عشان نبقى مؤدبين بنضيف please قبل الجملة. ولو عايزين نفي بنحط Don't في الأول.

أمثلة:

  • Tidy your room! (رتّب أوضتك!)
  • Don't forget your keys! (متنساش مفاتيحك!)
  • Please close the window. (لو سمحت قفل الشباك.)

رابعاً: طلب الحاجة بأدب (Request language)

عشان تطلب من حد يعمل حاجة بأدب، عندك تلات طرق:

  • Can you…? (تقدر...؟)
  • Could you…? (ممكن...؟ - أرقى شوية)
  • Would you mind + verb-ing…? (تمانع لو...؟ - الأرقى)

أمثلة:

  • Can you help me?
  • Could you open the window?
  • Would you mind closing the door?

نصيحة مهمة للكتابة: Capital letters و Full stops

ابدأ كل جملة بـ capital letter يعني حرف كبير (T مش t)، واختم كل جملة بـ full stop يعني نقطة. ده بيخلي كتابتك واضحة ومرتبة.

مهمة الكتابة (Writing task)

اكتب five house rules يعني خمس قوانين للبيت بتاعك. استخدم imperatives وhave to وكلمات الشغلونات اللي اتعلمتها. مثال:

Tidy your room every day. You have to do the dishes after dinner.

خد وقتك وفكّر في القوانين، وبعدين استخدم كروت المراجعة عشان ترسّخ الكلمات في دماغك.

I have to tidy my room every weekend.

Listen: 'have to' for things that are necessary.

Please take out the rubbish.

Listen: a polite imperative with 'please'.

Could you help me with the dishes?

Listen: a polite request with 'Could you...?'.

PREPARE — Before you write, think about your home. Make notes: Which chores do you and your family do? Who does what? When? How often? Choose five short rules from this list: tidy your room, do the dishes, make the bed, take out the rubbish, vacuum the floor, feed the pet, set the table, do the laundry.

WRITE — Now write your five house rules. Start each rule with a capital letter and end with a full stop. Use imperatives (Tidy your room!) and have to (You have to…). Example: Tidy your room every day. You have to do the dishes after dinner.
