10 cards

In English, nouns are in two big groups: countable and uncountable. This is important because we use different words with each group.

Countable nouns are things we can count: one balloon, two balloons, three balloons. We can use a or an with a singular countable noun: a cake, an apple. We can also make them plural: cakes, sandwiches, biscuits.

Uncountable nouns are things we cannot count one by one: juice, water, lemonade, food, money. We do not use a/an with uncountable nouns, and they do not have a plural form. We cannot say a juice or two juices. We say some juice.

We use some in positive sentences and any in questions and negative sentences.

Look at the pattern:

Countable (plural) Uncountable
Positive There are some sandwiches. There is some juice.
Negative There aren't any crisps. There isn't any lemonade.
Question Are there any balloons? Is there any water?

We use how many with countable nouns (plural) and how much with uncountable nouns.

  • How many candles are there? — Twelve.
  • How much juice do we have? — A lot.

Remember: a/an is only for singular countable nouns. With uncountable nouns and plurals, we use some or any.

الأسماء المعدودة والأسماء غير المعدودة

في اللغة الإنجليزية، فيه نوعين كبار من الأسماء: countable nouns (الأسماء اللي بنقدر نعدها) و uncountable nouns (الأسماء اللي مش بنقدر نعدها). القاعدة دي مهمة جداً لأن كل نوع ليه كلمات مختلفة بتيجي معاه في الجملة.

أولاً: الأسماء المعدودة (Countable nouns)

دي حاجات بتقدر تعدها واحدة واحدة، وبتقبل المفرد والجمع. خد بالك من الأمثلة دي: balloon (بالون) تبقى balloons، cake (كيك) تبقى cakes، sandwich (ساندوتش) تبقى sandwiches، biscuit (بسكويت) تبقى biscuits. تقدر تقول: one sandwich، two sandwiches، three sandwiches. كمان بتستخدم معاها a أو an في المفرد: a cake، an apple.

ثانياً: الأسماء غير المعدودة (Uncountable nouns)

دي حاجات مش بنقدر نعدها، يعني بناخدها أو نشربها ككتلة واحدة. أمثلة مهمة من الدرس: juice (عصير)، water (مياه)، lemonade (ليمونادة)، food (أكل)، money (فلوس). القواعد هنا مختلفة تماماً:

  • مش بنستخدم a/an معاها
  • مش بيبقى ليها جمع، يعني مش بنقول two juices
  • بنقول some juice مش a juice

ثالثاً: Some و Any

في الجملة الإيجابية بنستخدم some، وفي السؤال أو النفي بنستخدم any:

  • There are some sandwiches on the table. (فيه ساندوتشات على الترابيزة)
  • There is some juice in the glass. (فيه عصير في الكوباية)
  • Are there any balloons? (فيه بالونات؟)
  • Is there any lemonade? (فيه ليمونادة؟)
  • There aren't any crisps. (مفيش شيبسي)

رابعاً: How many و How much

لما تسأل عن عدد حاجة معدودة استخدم how many، ولما تسأل عن كمية حاجة غير معدودة استخدم how much:

  • How many candles are there? → Twelve. (كام شمعة؟)
  • How much juice do we have? → A lot. (عندنا قد إيه عصير؟)

خلاصة القاعدة

a/an بنستخدمهم بس مع المفرد المعدود. مع الجمع ومع الأسماء غير المعدودة، بنستخدم some أو any حسب نوع الجملة.

There are some sandwiches and some juice on the table.

Read the example. Notice: 'some' is used with both plural countable (sandwiches) and uncountable (juice).

How much lemonade do we have?

Notice the question: 'how much' comes before the uncountable noun 'lemonade'.

It is Friday evening. Emma and Tom are friends. They are planning a birthday party for their friend Lucy. They are in Emma's kitchen, looking in the fridge and on the table.

Before you listen, think: What do people usually have at a birthday party? Listen to the dialogue and find out what Emma and Tom are buying for Lucy's party.

Now listen to the conversation and answer the questions that follow.

في المحادثة، Emma بتستخدم جمل زي "I'm making sandwiches" (أنا بعمل ساندوتشات) و "I'm buying some crisps and biscuits" (أنا بشتري شوية شيبسي وبسكوت). لما نكون اتفقنا على حاجة في المستقبل القريب، مش بنستخدم will، بنستخدم be + verb-ing. ده بيبين إن في خطة أو ترتيب خلاص، مش مجرد احتمال.

٢. الفرق بين some و any

  • some بنستخدمها في الجمل الموجبة ولما نتوقع الإجابة "نعم": "I'm buying some crisps"
  • any بنستخدمها في الأسئلة ولما مش متوقعين حاجة: "Do we have any juice?"

٣. How many للسؤال عن العدد

في الجملة "How many candles do we need?"

Emma and Tom are planning a birthday party. Listen carefully.

  1. E
Emma Hi Tom! Are you ready for Lucy's party tomorrow?
  2. T
Tom Yes, almost. What food are we having?
  3. E
Emma I'm making sandwiches and I'm buying some crisps and biscuits.
  4. T
Tom Great. Do we have any juice?
  5. E
Emma There's some orange juice in the fridge, and I'm going to buy some lemonade.
  6. T
Tom Perfect. How many candles do we need?
  7. E
Emma Lucy is ten on Sunday, so we need ten candles.
  8. T
    Tom And how many balloons?
  9. E
Emma Let's get twenty balloons. Pink and purple.
  10. T
Tom Sounds good. See you tomorrow!
Required

What is the dialogue about?

  • Cooking dinner at home
  • Planning a birthday party
  • Shopping for school
Required

Emma is going to buy lemonade for the party.

Required

Lucy is ___ (number) on Sunday.

When we make a plural noun, we usually add -s at the end, but the sound of that -s can be different. Today we look at two sounds: /s/ and /z/.

/s/ is a soft, quiet sound. Your voice does not vibrate. Put your hand on your throat and say ssss. You cannot feel a buzz. We use /s/ when the sound before -s is voiceless: /p/, /t/, /k/, /f/.

  • cakecakes /keɪks/ — k is voiceless
  • crisp → crisps /krɪsps/ — p is voiceless
  • biscuit → biscuits /bɪskɪts/ — t is voiceless

/z/ is a louder, buzzing sound. Your voice vibrates. Put your hand on your throat and say zzzz. You can feel a buzz. We use /z/ when the sound before -s is voiced (when you use your voice): /b/, /d/, /g/, /v/, /n/, /m/, /l/, /r/, and all vowels.

  • sandwichsandwiches /sændwɪʃɪz/ — ʃ is voiced, but the e before s is voiced
  • balloon → balloons /bəluːnz/ — n is voiced
  • candlecandles /kændlz/ — l is voiced

Listen to the difference: crisps /s/ vs candles /z/. The mouth is in a similar place, but in candles you can feel the buzz in your throat.

  • cake → cakes /keɪks/ - الـ k voiceless
  • crisp → crisps /krɪsps/ - الـ p voiceless
  • biscuit → biscuits /bɪskɪts/ - الـ t voiceless

  • balloon → balloons /bəluːnz/ - الـ n voiced
  • candle → candles /kændlz/ - الـ l voiced

الفرق في الحتة العملية

جرّب دلوقتي تقول crisps و candles ورا بعض. حط إيدك على زورك وانت بتقولهم. في candles هتحس بالـ buzz في زورك، بس في crisps مفيش أي رعشة. نفس حركة بقك تقريبًا، بس الصوت مختلف تمامًا! ركز على الإحساس ده وقول ورايا في التمرين.

To make /s/: put your tongue near your top teeth, push air out, no voice. To make /z/: same place, but turn your voice on. Feel the buzz in your throat.

Required

Which word do you hear?

  • crisps
  • candles
Required

Say the word. The -s is /s/ because 'k' is voiceless.

cakes

Required

Say the word. The -s is /z/ because 'n' is voiced.

balloons

Required

Read the sentence out loud. Notice crisps ends in /s/ and candles ends in /z/.

We have crisps and candles on the table.

Reading strategy — Skimming for gist: When you skim, you read quickly to get the general idea. Don't stop at every word. Look at the first and last line, the title, and the pictures. Ask: What is this about? Who is it for?

Before you read, learn these four key words. They will help you understand the message.

  • invite (verb) — to ask someone to come to a party
  • flavour (noun) — the taste of food, like chocolate or strawberry
  • present (noun) — a gift, something you give someone
  • guest (noun) — a person who comes to a party

Now skim the message below.

القراءة السريعة بـ Skimming

في الدرس ده إنت هتقرأ رسالة قصيرة عن حفلة عيد ميلاد. بس إحنا مش عايزينك تضيع وقتك في قراءة كل كلمة. عشان كده بنستخدم طريقة اسمها skimming — ودي معناها إنك تمشي عينيك بسرعة على النص عشان تمسك الفكرة العامة بس، من غير ما توقف عند كل تفصيلة.

إيه اللي بتعمله وأنت بتعمل skim؟

إنت بتحط قدامك سؤال واحد بس: What is this about?

I'm going to invite everyone to my birthday، يبقى هيوجّه دعوة لكل الناس. وguest هي الشخص اللي بييجي بناءً على الدعوة دي — Are we expecting many guests tonight?

flavour بقى هي طعم الأكل أو الشراب. لما تقعد في حفلة وتلاقي تورتة، هتسأل What flavour is the cake? عشان تعرف لو شوكولاتة ولا فراولة ولا فانيليا. وpresent هي الهدية اللي بتهديها لحد — I wrapped the present in blue paper.

لما تشوف الكلمات دي في سياقها الطبيعي، الـ skim هيبقى أسهل عليك بكتير، لأنك مش هتوقف عند كل كلمة جديدة وهتفهم الرسالة من أول نظرة.

Hi everyone!

My name is Lucy and I'm ten years old on Sunday. I'm having a birthday party at home. It starts at 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

We are going to have a big chocolate cake with ten candles. My mum is making cheese sandwiches and ham sandwiches. There is going to be orange juice, lemonade, and some crisps and biscuits for the children.

Please bring a small present if you want to, but please don't bring anything expensive. The most important thing is to come and have fun!

I can't wait to see all my guests. There are going to be about fifteen children, and we are putting up pink and purple balloons.

See you on Sunday!

Lucy

  • We are going to have a big chocolate cake
  • There is going to be orange juice

going to بنستخدمها لما يكون الموضوع متفق عليه ومتأكد إنه هيحصل. ولاحظي فرقها عن will اللي بنستخدمها للقرارات اللحظية.

الأسماء المعدودة وغير المعدونة + some

في الرسالة Lucy بتقول some crisps و some biscuits و some lemonade. كلمة some بنستخدمها لما نقدم أو نقترح حاجة، وبتتجانس مع الأسماء المعدودة والغير معدودة. ولاحظي إن في British English بنقول crisps للبطاطس المقلية، مش chips زي في أمريكا.

تدريب عملي

أول ما تنزل للرسالة، سكِم بسرعة وخُد الفكرة. وبعدين اقراها تاني بالتفصيل عشان تجاوب على الأسئلة اللي بعدها صح.

Speaking

Speaking

7 cards

In this section you will learn useful phrases to talk about a birthday party. You will hear a short model dialogue, then you will practise saying the key sentences, and finally you will talk to the AI about a party.

Here are the phrases you will use:

  • I'm having a party. — You are going to have a party.
  • What are you bringing? — You want to know what someone is bringing to the party.
  • How many people are coming? — You want to know the number of guests.
  • Do you have any juice? — You want juice (uncountable noun, so use 'any').
  • There are some sandwiches on the table. — Telling someone about food at the party.

Use some in positive sentences, any in questions and negative sentences. Use how much with uncountable nouns and how many with countable plurals.

يعني بدل ما تقول I have a party بنقول I'm having a party — عشان كده الجملة النموذجية هي I'm having a birthday party on Saturday، ومعناها إن الحفلة متفق عليها خلاص وموعدها السبت. كمان بنقول We're having sandwiches, crisps, and a big cake عشان نوصف الأكل اللي في الحفلة.

الفرق بين Some و Any

تاني حاجة، فيه فرق مهم بين "some" و "any" لازم تفهمه كويس:

  • بنستخدم "some" في الجمل الموجبة والإجابات الإيجابية، زي: We're having sandwiches أو Yes, there is some juice.
  • بنستخدم "any" في الأسئلة والجمل المنفية، زي: Is there any lemonade? أو There aren't any drinks left.

الفرق بين How Much و How Many

تالت حاجة، خلي بالك من الفرق بين "how much" و "how many":

  • How much بنستخدمها مع الأسماء الـ uncountable (اللي مينفعش نعدها) زي juice و lemonade.
  • How many بنستخدمها مع الأسماء الـ countable plurals (اللي نقدر نعدها) زي people و sandwiches.

فـ لما نسأل عن عدد الناس بنقول How many people are coming?، ولما نسأل عن كمية العصير بنقول How much juice is there?.

جمل مفتاحية تانية

كمان اتعلم جملة What are you bringing to eat? دي طريقة طبيعية تسأل بيها حد جاي معاك إيه في الحفلة. وكلمة bringing هنا من الـ present continuous لأنك بتسأل عن حاجة مرتبطة بخطط الحفلة.

الخلاصة: لما تتكلم عن حفلة، ركز على الـ present continuous للخطط، واستخدم some و any صح، واختار how much و how many حسب نوع الاسم. مع شوية تدريب هتقدر تدعو صحابك وتتكلم عن الحفلة بثقة!

Listen to a short model conversation about a party.

  1. E
Emma Hi Tom! I'm having a birthday party on Saturday. Are you free?
  2. T
Tom Yes! What are you bringing to eat?
  3. E
Emma We're having sandwiches, crisps, and a big cake.
  4. T
Tom Great! Is there any lemonade?
  5. E
Emma Yes, there is. And there's some juice too.
  6. T
Tom Perfect. How many people are coming?
  7. E
Emma About fifteen. See you at four!

I'm having a birthday party on Saturday.

This is the key sentence. Use it to invite a friend.

Required

Read the sentence out loud. Notice the countable plurals: sandwiches, crisps.

We're having sandwiches, crisps, and a big cake.

Required

Read the questions and answers out loud. Notice 'any' in the question and 'some' in the positive answer.

Is there any lemonade? Yes, there is. And there's some juice too.

Required

When we talk about a birthday party, we need words for the food, the drinks, and the things around us. In this lesson you will meet eight common words you can use at every party.

Look at the table. It shows you the word, the kind of word it is (noun), and a small picture in your language to help you remember it. After the table, you can read each word in a real sentence about a party.

Word Kind Meaning (AR) Example
cake noun We have a big chocolate cake.
candle noun I put 18 candles on the cake.
sandwich noun She makes cheese sandwiches for the party.
crisps noun Do you want some crisps?
biscuits noun There are sweet biscuits on the plate.
juice noun I'd like some orange juice, please.
lemonade noun The children drink cold lemonade.
balloons noun Pink and blue balloons are on the wall.

Some of these words are things you can count one by one — for example, one balloon, two balloons, ten balloons. Other words are things you cannot count one by one — for example, juice and lemonade. We drink them in glasses, but we cannot say "one juice" or "two juices". You will learn more about this in the next section.

Read the words out loud. Listen to the rhythm. Birthday parties are fun, and these words will help you talk about yours.

  • one balloon, two balloons
  • one candle, eighteen candles
  • one cake, two cakes
  • one sandwich, three sandwiches

Uncountable nouns (أسماء مش بتتعد): يعني مش بنقدر نعدها. زي juice و lemonade. دي حاجات بنشربها، فبنقول:

  • some juice, please
  • cold lemonade
  • a glass of juice

مش صح تقول "one juice" أو "two juices".

ملحوظة على British English

الكلمتين crisps و biscuits بياخدوا حرف الـ 's' في الآخر لما تبقى جمع. خلي بالك، في American English، crisps اسمها chips، و biscuits اسمها cookies. لكن إحنا في الكورس ده بنستخدم British English.

جملة كاملة من الدرس

We have a big chocolate cake, orange juice, and pink balloons for the party.

  • sandwich
    sandwich ˈsænwɪtʃ
A food made of two slices of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them.
Required

Match each party word with its meaning.

Match each party word with its meaning.
