This unit was all about money, prices, and the bank. You learnt the words for UK money, the quantifiers some, any, much and many, and useful language for talking to people at the bank.

UK money comes in notes (£5, £10, £20, £50) and coins (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2). The unit of money in the UK is the pound sterling. We write prices with the symbol £ before the number — for example, £5.99. Common verbs with money are cost (the price of something), pay (give money), spend (use money to buy things), and save (keep money for later). At a shop we often say, How much is it? or How much does it cost?

Some and any go before plural nouns or uncountable nouns. We use some in positive sentences and in offers or requests (I'd like some water, please). We use any in negative sentences (I don't have any cash) and in questions (Do you have any change?). Much goes with uncountable nouns (How much money?), and many goes with countable nouns (How many cards?).

At the bank you can open a bank account, put money in (deposit), take money out (withdraw), and pay with a bank card at a cash machine (also called an ATM). Other useful words are PIN (your secret number), receipt, and change (coins you get back from paying too much).

Using capital letters

Always start a sentence with a capital letter: I have a bank account. Also use capital letters for the names of people, places, banks, and the pronoun I. For example: My bank is in London. I go to the bank on Monday.

Your writing task

Write a short email to your bank. Say hello, ask about opening an account, and use some, any, much or many at least once. Use at least three bank words in your email.

Before you write your email to the bank, think about these things:

  • What is your name and what bank do you want to email?
  • What do you want to ask? (for example, open an account, get a card, or change your PIN)
  • What bank words can you use? (account, cash, card, deposit, withdraw, PIN, receipt)
  • Can you use some, any, much or many at least once?

Make a short list of 3 or 4 ideas before you write.

WRITE

Write a short email (60 to 90 words) to your bank. Start with Dear Sir/Madam or Dear [Bank Name]. Then:

  • Say hello and give your name.
  • Ask about opening a bank account, or ask one question about a bank service.
  • Use some, any, much or many at least once.
  • Use at least three bank words.
  • End with Thank you and Yours faithfully.
