Welcome to your Unit 12 review! In this unit you learned how to talk about things that happened in the past. Let's look at the two main ideas one more time.

Past time expressions help you say when something happened. Common ones are: yesterday, last night, last week, last weekend, last month, last year, and ... ago (for example, two days ago, a week ago). These words usually go at the end of the sentence, or at the beginning to start a story.

Past simple is the verb form we use. For regular verbs, add -ed: work → worked, play → played, watch → watched, visit → visited, study → studied (drop the y and add -ied). For irregular verbs, the form changes in its own way and you must learn it: go → went, see → saw, eat → ate, have → had, be → was/were, do → did, come → came, make → made, take → took, get → got. Look at this mini-table:

The negative is didn't + verb: I didn't go to school. The question is Did + subject + verb: Did you watch the film? — and the short answer uses the base verb: Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.

Writing task: Write a short blog post about your last weekend. Use four or five sentences. Try to use a mix of regular and irregular past verbs, and add a time expression at the start of each sentence.

Using time expressions — Start each sentence with a time word like Yesterday, Last Saturday, On Saturday morning or Two days ago. This makes the order of your story very clear to the reader.

Listen and repeat. Notice the regular past simple 'visited' and the time expression 'last weekend' at the end.

PREPARE — Before you write, gather your ideas. Think about your last weekend and answer these questions in your head: Where did you go? Who did you see? What did you eat or drink? What did you watch or listen to? What was the weather like? Try to remember a mix of regular verbs (visited, watched, played, worked, cooked) and irregular verbs (went, had, ate, saw, took, gave).

WRITE — Now write a short blog post (4–6 sentences) about your last weekend. Start your first sentence with 'Last weekend, I ...' and try to begin each new sentence with a different time expression, for example: 'On Saturday morning, I ...' / 'In the afternoon, we ...' / 'Later that night, I ...'. Use a mix of regular past verbs (visited, watched, played) and irregular ones (went, had, ate, saw, took, gave). Don't worry about mistakes — just keep writing.

REVIEW — Read your blog post again and check these points: 1) Did you use the past simple correctly? (Regular verbs end in -ed; irregular verbs have their own form.) 2) Did you start each sentence with a time expression? 3) Did you use a mix of regular and irregular verbs? 4) Are capital letters, full stops and spelling correct? If you find a mistake, fix it — that's how you learn!
