Welcome to your Unit 14 review! In this unit, you practised talking about travel and experiences. You learned useful words for journeys, hotels, airports, and holidays abroad. You also studied two important past tenses: the past simple for finished actions, and the present perfect for experiences up to now.

Past simple – quick recap

We use the past simple for things that happened and finished at a specific time in the past.

Form Example
regular: verb + -ed I visited London in May.
irregular: special form She went to the airport yesterday.

Time markers: yesterday, last week, last year, two days ago, in 2022, when I was young.

Be careful: Many common verbs are irregular — go → went, have → had, see → saw, take → took, fly → flew, buy → bought.

Present perfect – quick recap

We use the present perfect for life experiences, recent news, and actions with a result now.

Form Example
have / has + past participle I have travelled to Spain.
have / has + been / done / gone She has never flown before.

Time markers: ever, never, just, already, yet, recently, so far, this week, today.

Be careful: We do not use the present perfect with yesterday, last week, ago, or in 2019 — those need the past simple.

Writing task: A blog about my trip

Imagine you travelled somewhere last month. Write a short blog post (80–120 words) for a travel website. Include:

  • where you went and with whom
  • what you did there (past simple)
  • something interesting you have done recently or a general experience (present perfect)
  • your opinion of the trip

Using time markers — a useful strategy: Put a clear time marker at the start or end of each sentence. This helps you choose the correct tense automatically. Last summer I visited… (past simple) or I have just come back from… (present perfect).

PREPARE — Before you write, gather your ideas. Ask yourself: Where did I go? Who did I go with? When did I go? What did I see or do there? Make a short list of 4–6 ideas. Then choose 2–3 ideas to use with the past simple (things you did on the trip), and 1 idea to use with the present perfect (a life experience or recent news).

WRITE — Write a short blog post (80–120 words) for a travel website. Tell readers about a recent trip. Use the past simple for the things you did on that trip, and the present perfect for a life experience or something that is true for you now. Start with a clear title and use time markers like last summer, two days ago, recently, or this year.

REVIEW — Check your blog before you finish. ✓ Does every sentence start with a capital letter? ✓ Did I use the past simple with yesterday / last … / ago? ✓ Did I use the present perfect with ever / never / just / recently? ✓ Did I write have / has + past participle (not has went)? ✓ Did I check my irregular verbs (go → went, have → had, see → saw, fly → flew)?
