When we talk about a book we have read, we usually use the past simple because the reading happened at a finished time. The past simple has two main forms: regular verbs ending in -ed and irregular verbs with a special form.

Regular verbs are easy: we add -ed to the base form. Finish → finished, start → started, like → liked. With verbs ending in -e, we only add -d (like → liked). With verbs ending in a consonant + -y, the -y changes to -ied (carry → carried).

Irregular verbs must be memorised, because they do not follow the rule. Here are common ones for talking about books:

Base form Past simple Meaning
read read (pronounced /red/)
write wrote created a text
give gave handed to someone
take took borrowed
make made created
think thought had an opinion
buy bought paid for

Forming questions and negatives: We use did + base verb. We do not add -ed after did. Did you like the book? — not did you liked. I didn't finish it. — not I didn't finished.

Time expressions that often appear with the past simple: yesterday, last week/month/year, two days ago, in 2023, when I was younger, the other day.

Look at the example: I read a novel last summer. The author wrote it in 2010. I didn't like the ending, but my friend loved it. She bought three copies for her family. Notice the time expression last summer and the irregular verbs read, wrote, bought. Notice the negative didn't like with the base form, not liked.

يا هلا بيك! تعالى نتعلم النهاردة إزاي بتستخدم الماضي البسيط (Past Simple) لما بتحكي عن كتاب قريته. ده أهم زمن لما تتكلم عن تجاربك في القراءة، لأن القراءة دي حصلت في وقت خلص وراح.

الأفعال المنتظمة (Regular verbs): دي الأفعال السهلة، بنضيف لها -ed في الآخر:

  • finish → finished
  • start → started
  • like → liked

بس خد بالك من شوية استثناءات:

  • لو الفعل خلص بـ -e، بنضيف -d بس، زي like → liked.
  • لو الفعل خلص بـ consonant + y، الـ y بتتغير لـ -ied، زي carry → carried.

الأفعال الشاذة (Irregular verbs): دي الأفعال اللي لازم تحفظها، لأنها مش بتتبع أي قاعدة. دي أهمهم للكلام عن الكتب:

  • read → read (بس بتنطقها /red/ في الماضي، مش /riːd/ زي المضارع)
  • write → wrote
  • give → gave
  • take → took
  • make → made
  • think → thought
  • buy → bought

لما تقابل read في جملة، شوف السياق: لو جنبها last summer أو yesterday، يبقى هي الماضي وتنطقها /red/.

الأسئلة والنفي (Questions and Negatives): بنستخدم did + الفعل في الأصل، وممنوع نضيف -ed بعد did:

  • Did you like the book? (صح) — مش Did you liked (غلط)
  • I didn't finish it. (صح) — مش I didn't finished (غلط)

القاعدة الذهبية: بعد did دايماً استخدم الفعل في صورته الأصلية.

كلمات الوقت (Time Expressions): دي كلمات لما تشوفها في الجملة، اعرف فوراً إنك محتاج الماضي البسيط:

  • yesterday (إمبارح)
  • last week / last month / last year
  • two days ago (من يومين)
  • in 2023
  • when I was younger (لما كنت صغير)
  • the other day (اللي فات)

لما تشوف أي كلمة من دول، ده تلميح قوي إن الجملة محتاجة past simple. خلي بالك من الأفعال الشاذة، لأنها أكتر حاجة بتيجي في الأسئلة والامتحانات.

I read a novel by a Japanese author last summer.

Read this example. Notice the irregular past form read (/red/) and the time expression last summer.

She didn't like the ending, but she bought three copies for her family.

Read this example. Notice the negative with didn't + base verb, and the irregular verb bought.

In this section, you will hear a short conversation between two friends, Emma and Tom. They are talking about a novel they both read recently. Listen first for the gist — the general idea — and then for specific information such as names, places, and opinions.

Before you listen, predict: what might two friends say about a book? They might talk about the characters, the plot, where they bought it, whether they recommend it, and how it ended. Keep these ideas in mind as you listen, because they will help you choose the correct answers.

Strategy — Listening for gist: When you listen the first time, do not try to catch every word. Focus on the situation: Who is speaking? What are they discussing? How do they feel about it? The second time, you can listen for details such as names, places and exact opinions.

في الدرس ده هنتعلم إزاي نتكلم بالإنجليزي عن الكتب اللي قرأناها، وإيه التعبيرات اللي بنستخدمها لما نبادل آراءنا مع صحابنا عن رواية أو كتاب.

الجُمل اللي هتسمعوها في المحادثة:

بين Emma و Tom، وهما صحاب بيكلّموا عن رواية اسمها "The Silent Village". لما Emma سألت "Have you read anything good recently?" استخدمت الـ Present Perfect، لإنها بتسأل عن تجربة حصلت في الماضي بس ليها علاقة باللحظة الحالية. يعني مش بنحدد وقت معين، الأهم إن الحاجة حصلت قبل دلوقتي ولسه أثرها موجود.

Tom رد بـ Past Simple في "I finished a brilliant novel last weekend"، لإنه بيحدد وقت معين (last weekend) وبيقول إن الحاجة خلصت خلاص. ركّز على الفرق بين الاتنين: Present Perfect للتجارب العامة من غير وقت محدد، وPast Simple للأحداث اللي حصلت في وقت معلوم وانتهت.

كلمات ومصطلحات لازم تحفظهم:

  • page-turner: كتاب أو رواية مش بتقدر تسيبها، بتشدّك من أول صفحة. Tom قال "It was a real page-turner" يعني مش قادر يبطّل قراءة.
  • recommendation: توصية أو اقتراح. Emma قالت "I need a good recommendation" يعني عايزة حد يقترحلها كتاب حلو.
  • plot: أحداث القصة والحبكة. "The plot was full of surprises" يعني القصة فيها مفاجآت كتير.
  • ending: نهاية القصة. "I didn't expect the ending at all" يعني النهاية ماكانش متوقعها خالص.

قاعدة بسيطة في الـ Articles:

لما نتكلم عن نوع من الكتب أو شخصية جديدة، بنستخدم a/an: "a brilliant novel"، "a Japanese author"، "a quiet detective". لكن لما نتكلم عن عناصر محددة جوه الكتاب اللي إحنا متكلمين عنه، بنستخدم the: "the main character"، "the plot"، "the ending".

نصيحة للاستماع:

أول مرة اسمع عشان الفكرة العامة بس — مين بيتكلم وإيه موضوع الكلام. تاني مرة ركّز على التفاصيل زي اسم الكتاب، المؤلف، وآراء كل واحد فيهم. كده هتقدر تجاوب على أي سؤال سواء كان عن الفكرة العامة أو عن تفاصيل دقيقة.

Two friends, Emma and Tom, meet in a café and talk about a novel they both read last month.

  1. E
Emma Hi Tom! Have you read anything good recently?
  2. T
Tom Yes, I finished a brilliant novel last weekend. It was a real page-turner.
  3. E
Emma Oh, which one? I need a good recommendation.
  4. T
Tom It's called 'The Silent Village'. A Japanese author wrote it in 2019.
  5. E
Emma I read that one too! I loved the main character, the quiet detective.
  6. T
Tom Me too. The plot was full of surprises, and I didn't expect the ending at all.
  7. E
Emma I bought three copies for my family. My sister didn't like it, though.
  8. T
Tom Really? Well, I think everyone should read it. It changed how I think about small towns.
  9. E
Emma I agree. Let's talk about it again after we read the author's new book.
Required

Listening for gist: what is the conversation mainly about?

  • A film they watched at the cinema
  • A novel they both read recently
  • A holiday they took last year
Required

Which book are they discussing?

  • The Silent Village
  • The Small Town
  • The Quiet Detective
Required

Tom says the book was boring and slow.

Required

Emma bought ___ copies of the book for her family.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation

7 cards

English regular past simple verbs all end in -ed on the page, but we pronounce this ending in three different ways. Learning which sound to use will make your English sound much more natural.

1. /ɪd/ (an extra syllable) — We add a full -id syllable when the base verb already ends in /t/ or /d/. Your tongue touches the top of your mouth to make the final -d. Examples: wanted → /ˈwɒn.tɪd/, needed → /ˈniː.dɪd/, started → /ˈstɑː.tɪd/, decided → /dɪˈsaɪ.dɪd/.

2. /t/ (a sharp, unvoiced sound) — We use this when the base verb ends in a voiceless consonant: p, k, f, s, sh, ch. Put your hand on your throat — you should not feel a vibration. Examples: liked → /laɪkt/, stopped → /stɒpt/, finished → /ˈfɪn.ɪʃt/, kissed → /kɪst/.

3. /d/ (a soft, voiced sound) — We use this when the base verb ends in a voiced sound: vowels and most other consonants (b, g, l, m, n, r, v, z). Put your hand on your throat — you should feel a vibration. Examples: loved → /lʌvd/, played → /pleɪd/, enjoyed → /ɪnˈdʒɔɪd/, called → /kɔːld/.

A quick rule of thumb: if you can hear a new syllable, it is /ɪd/. If the final sound is sharp and breathy, it is /t/. If the final sound is soft and the word feels longer, it is /d/. Practise the three pairs below and notice the difference.

  • wanted → /ˈwɒn.tɪd/ (وانتد)
  • needed → /ˈniː.dɪd/ (نيدد)
  • started → /ˈstɑː.tɪd/ (ستارتد)
  • decided → /dɪˈsaɪ.dɪd/ (ديسايدد)

2. صوت /t/ - صوت حاد من غير ڤيبرات

لو الفعل بيخلص بـ consonant مكتوم (يعني من غير اهتزاز في الزور)، زي p, k, f, s, sh, ch، بنطق الـ ed كصوت t حاد وبس. حط إيدك على زورك وإنت بتقول الكلام، مش هتحس بأي اهتزاز خالص. مثلاً:

  • liked → /laɪkt/ (لايكت)
  • stopped → /stɒpt/ (ستوبت)
  • finished → /ˈfɪn.ɪʃt/ (فينيشت)
  • kissed → /kɪst/ (كِست)

3. صوت /d/ - صوت ناعم فيه ڤيبرات

لو الفعل بيخلص بـ صوت فيه اهتزاز، زي vowels أو b, g, l, m, n, r, v, z، بنطق الـ ed كصوت d ناعم. حط إيدك على زورك تاني، هتحس بـ vibration واهتزاز خفيف. مثلاً:

  • loved → /lʌvd/ (لاڤد)
  • played → /pleɪd/ (بلايد)
  • enjoyed → /ɪnˈdʒɔɪd/ (إنجويد)
  • called → /kɔːld/ (كولد)

Three sounds for -ed: /ɪd/ after t or d (wanted, needed), /t/ after voiceless consonants (liked, stopped), /d/ after voiced sounds (loved, played). Feel your throat: vibration = /d/, no vibration = /t/.

Required

Which word do you hear?

  • liked
  • liked
Required

Listen. Does the past form end with the sound /ɪd/, /t/, or /d/?

  • /ɪd/ (two syllables: want-ed)
  • /t/ (one syllable, sharp end)
  • /d/ (one syllable, soft end)
Required

Say this word. End sharply, with no vibration in your throat. This is the /t/ sound.

liked

Required

Say this word. Let your voice continue and vibrate until the end. This is the /d/ sound.

loved

Required

Say this word in two clear syllables: /wɒn-tɪd/. The -ed ending is a full new syllable here.

wanted

Reading

Reading

6 cards

In this section, you will read a short book review written by a reader called Samira. Book reviews are personal — the writer shares their opinion, describes the plot a little, and recommends the book (or not).

Strategy — Skimming and scanning: First, skim the review quickly to get the general idea: is the reviewer positive or negative? Then, scan for specific information such as the title, the author, the genre and any details about the characters. Skimming helps you with gist questions; scanning helps you with detail questions.

Before reading, here are some key words from the review, with brief glosses:

  • thriller — a fast, exciting story about crime
  • detective — the person who tries to solve a crime
  • twist — a sudden, surprising change in the story
  • setting — the place and time where the story happens
  • ending — how the story finishes

Read the review, then answer the questions that follow.

في الجزء ده من الدرس، هنتعلم إزاي نقرأ book review بشكل فعّال. الـ book review هو كتابة رأي شخصي في كتاب، الكاتب بيحكي شوية عن القصة وبيقول رأيه في النهاية، وبيوصي بيه ولا لأ.

استراتيجية القراءة: Skimming و Scanning

  • setting - المكان والزمان اللي بتحصل فيهم القصة، زي "a small village in 1950".

'The Silent Village' — a review by Samira Khan

I read 'The Silent Village' by Aiko Tanaka in three days. It is a thriller set in a small mountain village in Japan. The main character is a young detective called Yuki, who returns to her childhood village after her grandmother dies. At first, nothing strange happens, but slowly Yuki discovers that the villagers are hiding a secret from 1950.

The plot is full of twists, and I didn't guess the ending at all. Tanaka's writing is clear and simple, which makes the book easy to read in English. The setting — cold mountains, old wooden houses, heavy snow — feels real and a little frightening. My only criticism is that the middle chapter is a bit slow.

I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a quiet but exciting story. It is a true page-turner, and I already bought a copy for my brother.

الـ Reading: مراجعة كتاب The Silent Village

في الجزء ده، هتقري review لرواية اسمها "The Silent Village" للكاتبة اليابانية Aiko Tanaka. الـ review ده كاتبه Samira Khan، وهي بتحكي عن thriller - يعني رواية غموض وإثارة - قرأتها في تلات أيام بس. الرواية بتحكي عن محققة شابة اسمها Yuki بترجع لقرية جدتها في اليابان وبتكتشف سر غامض من سنة 1950.

إستراتيجية القراءة (Reading Strategy)

قبل ما تبدأي تقرئي الـ passage، لازم تعرفي إزاي تستخدميه صح. القراءة الفعالة عندها 3 مراحل:

  • Skimming: اقرئي بسرعة عشان تعرفي الـ main idea بس. ركزي على أول جملة في كل فقرة.
  • Scanning: لما تيجي تجاوبي على سؤال معين، دوّري على الكلمات المفتاحية في النص بسرعة من غير ما تقرئي كل كلمة.
  • Reading for detail: اقرئي بهدوء في المرحلة دي عشان تاخدي كل التفاصيل الصغيرة.

كلمات وعبارات مهمة من الـ passage

في الـ review ده، فيه كلمات مفيدة جداً تتعلميها وتستخدميها بعدين:

  • thriller: رواية غموض وإثارة
  • main character: الشخصية الرئيسية، واسمها هنا Yuki
  • plot: أحداث القصة
  • twists: تحولات ومفاجآت غير متوقعة في القصة
  • setting: المكان والزمان اللي بتحصل فيهم القصة
  • page-turner: كتاب مش بتقدري توقفي قراءته
  • recommend: أنصح بـ
  • criticism: ملاحظة سلبية أو انتقاد

قواعد لغوية مهمة

لاحظي استخدام past simple في حكي اللي حصل في الرواية:

  • "I read it in three days."
  • "Yuki returned to her village."
  • "I didn't guess the ending."

لاحظي كمان استخدام present simple في الـ review عشان تعطي رأيك:

  • "The writing is clear and simple."
  • "I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a quiet but exciting story."

الجملة الأخيرة دي مهمة جداً - تفتكريها لو عايزة تعملي review لكتاب بنفسك.

Required

Reading for gist: is this review positive or negative about the book?

  • Positive — the reviewer liked it and recommends it
  • Negative — the reviewer did not like it
  • The reviewer does not give an opinion
Required

Who is the main character in the book?

  • Aiko Tanaka
  • Yuki
  • Samira's brother
Required

The book is set in a big city in Japan.

Required

What is Samira's only criticism of the book?

  • The ending is too fast
  • The middle chapter is a bit slow
  • The main character is unkind
Speaking

Speaking

7 cards

Now it is your turn to speak about a book. In real life, when we recommend a book, we usually say: the title and the author, what the book is about, what we liked, and whether we recommend it. We also often explain why we liked it.

Below are some useful phrases. Read them, then practise saying them aloud.

Function Useful phrase
Naming the book I recently read a novel called …
Giving the author It was written by …
Saying what it is about It's about … / The story is set in …
Giving your opinion I really enjoyed it. / I didn't like the ending.
Recommending I highly recommend it. / I'd definitely read it again.
Asking for a recommendation Can you recommend anything similar?

When you speak, try to use past simple verbs (read, liked, finished, enjoyed) and a few of the vocabulary words from this lesson (novel, character, plot, page-turner). Speak slowly and clearly, and remember the three sounds for -ed endings.

I recently read a novel called The Silent Village.
  • المؤلف: قول مين الكاتب. مثلاً: It was written by Aiko Tanaka.
  • موضوع الكتاب: اشرح الكتاب بيحكي عن إيه. مثلاً: The plot was full of twists.
  • رأيك الشخصي: قول إيه اللي عجبك أو ما عجبكش. مثلاً: I really enjoyed the main character.
  • التوصية: في الآخر، وصّي بيه أو لأ. مثلاً: I'd definitely recommend it.

لو عايز تقول لصاحبك عن كتاب: "I read a brilliant thriller last week. The plot was full of twists, and the main character was fantastic. I'd definitely recommend it." شايف إزاي الأفعال في الماضي كلها ماشية صح، والكلمات المفتاحية متوزعة طبيعي؟

ابدأ دلوقتي وسجّل كلامك ببطء وواضح، وبعدها هتعمل محادثة حية مع الذكاء الاصطناعي.

When we talk about books, we use a small set of common words again and again. Learning these will help you describe a book, recommend it to a friend, or write a short review. Below are eight useful words for talking about books you have read. Read the table, then look at the example sentence for each word — it shows the word in a natural context.

Most of these words are nouns, because books are objects we discuss. A few are verbs, like recommend and review, which describe actions we do with books. Notice that novel refers to a long story with characters and a plot, while chapter is one section of a book. A plot is the story itself — what happens. A character is a person in the story. A page-turner is an informal word for a book that is so exciting you cannot stop reading it.

Word Part of speech Meaning Example sentence
novel noun a long written story I finished a brilliant novel last weekend.
author noun the person who wrote the book The author travelled to three countries for research.
chapter noun one section of a book The first chapter starts in a small village.
character noun a person in a story My favourite character is the quiet detective.
plot noun the events in a story The plot was full of surprises.
recommend verb to suggest something good Can you recommend a good book?
review noun a short opinion about a book Her review in the paper was excellent.
page-turner noun a book you cannot stop reading The thriller was a real page-turner.

Pay special attention to the spelling of recommend — it has a 'c' and a double 'm'. The word plot is a short, single-syllable noun, easy to confuse with words like plane or plan, so listen carefully when you hear it.

الكلام عن الكتب

الدرس ده بيعلّمك مجموعة كلمات أساسية بنستخدمها لما نحكي عن الكتب اللي قرأناها. الكلمات دي هتساعدك توصف كتاب، تعمل review قصير، أو recommend كتاب لصاحبك.

أنواع الكلمات (Parts of speech)

مثلا ممكن تقول: "I read a brilliant novel last weekend." (قرأت رواية جامدة الأسبوع اللي فات)، أو "The plot was full of surprises."
