There is and there are are two of the most useful expressions in English for talking about places. They help us say what exists in a particular location. Look at these examples: There is a famous castle in Edinburgh. There are several art galleries in the city centre. Notice the pattern: there is comes before a singular or uncountable noun, while there are comes before a plural noun. The word there is not a real subject — it simply means "something exists in this place."
In the negative, we shorten the forms: there isn't (= there is not) and there aren't (= there are not). We often add any after the negative form to make the meaning clearer. There isn't a beach near my house. There aren't any museums in my small town. To form questions, we put is or are at the beginning of the sentence, before there: Is there a market nearby? Are there any good restaurants in this area? Short answers are also very common in conversation. We say "Yes, there is" or "No, there isn't" — never "Yes, it is" or "No, there are not."
Singular / uncountable
Plural
Positive
There is a museum.
There are many museums.
Negative
There isn't a museum.
There aren't any museums.
Question
Is there a museum?
Are there any museums?
Short answer (+)
Yes, there is.
Yes, there are.
Short answer (–)
No, there isn't.
No, there aren't.
When we describe places to visit, we often add information about location with prepositions such as in, near, on, and next to. For example: There is a beautiful parkon the hill or There are some lovely cafés in the old town. You can also use adjectives: an oldcastle, a famousmonument, a busymarket. Be careful with subject–verb agreement. The verb must match the noun that follows. Don't say "There are a museum" or "There is many parks." This is a common mistake, but the rule is simple: is for singular, are for plural.
We can also use there is to introduce a new topic in a conversation — for example, "There is something I want to ask you." Because there is and there are are so common in everyday English, learning to use them well will immediately make your speaking and writing more natural. You will hear these expressions in every travel video, every city guide, and almost every conversation about places. In this lesson, you will practise them in many different ways: reading sentences, completing gaps, choosing the correct form, and using them in your own conversations. By the end, you should be able to describe any city or town with confidence.
قاعدة There is و There are
لما تحب تتكلم عن أماكن أو حاجات موجودة في مكان معين، بتبقى محتاج تعبيرين مهمين جداً في الإنجليزي: There is و There are. المثال من الدرس بيقول There is a beautiful art gallery near the river (فيه معرض فنون جميل جنب النهر)، والتاني بيقول There are many old buildings in the city centre (فيه مباني قديمة كتير في وسط المدينة).
القاعدة الأساسية
الكلمة there هنا مش فاعل حقيقي زي باقي الجمل العادية، هي بس بتدينا فكرة إن "فيه حاجة موجودة في المكان ده". اللي بيفرق هو الفعل اللي بعدها:
There is بتتجي قبل الاسم المفرد أو اللي مش بييجي منه جمع (uncountable). مثلاً: There is a museum (فيه متحف).
There are بتتجي قبل الاسم الجمع. مثلاً: There are many museums (فيه متاحف كتير).
النفي (Negative)
لما تنفي الجملة، بتختصر الصيغة وبتضيف any:
There isn't = There is not. مثلاً: There isn't a beach near my house (مفيش شط جنب بيتنا).
There aren't = There are not. مثلاً: There aren't any museums in my town (مفيش متاحف خالص في بلدتي).
الأسئلة والإجابات القصيرة
في السؤال، بتنقل الفعل في أول الجملة:
Is there a market nearby? (فيه سوق قريب؟)
Are there any good restaurants? (فيه مطاعم حلوة؟)
والإجابات القصيرة مهمة جداً في الكلام:
Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.
حروف المكان (Prepositions)
لما توصف أماكن، بتحتاج تحدد المكان كويس:
in = في، زي in the city centre
near = جنب، زي near the river
on = على، زي on the hill
next to = جنب بالظبط، زي next to the park
الأخطاء الشائعة
لازم الفعل يطابق الاسم اللي بعده، وده أشهر غلطة عند المتعلمين:
❌ There are a museum (غلط)
✅ There is a museum (صح)
❌ There is many parks (غلط)
✅ There are many parks (صح)
نصيحة للتمارين
في التمارين اللي جاية، بص الأول على الاسم اللي بعد there - هل هو مفرد ولا جمع؟ لو جمع اختار are، ولو مفرد اختار is. كده هتضمن الإجابة الصح في كل سؤال.

In this listening activity, you will hear a short conversation between Emma and Tom. Emma is visiting Tom's city for the weekend and wants to know what places she can visit. Tom is a local, so he knows the city well and can give her good advice.
Listen carefully to the places Tom mentions. Notice how he uses there is and there are to describe his city, and pay attention to the question forms Is there…? and Are there…?
Before you listen, think about this: If a friend visited your city, what three places would you recommend? How would you describe them using there is or there are?
السياق العام للحوار
في الدرس ده هتسمع محادثة قصيرة بين Emma و Tom. إيما جاية تزور مدينة توم في الـ weekend وبتسأله إيه الأماكن الحلوة اللي ممكن تروحها. توم عايش في المدينة دي وعارفها كويس، فبيبدأ يوصفلها أماكن زي القلعة القديمة في النص، ومتحف الفن جنب النهر، ومصنع الأكل يوم السبت.
القاعدة الأساسية: There is / There are
الـ grammar المهم هنا هو استخدام there is و there are عشان توصف أماكن أو حاجات موجودة. القاعدة بسيطة:
There is (أو there's في الكلام العادي) → لما بتتكلم عن حاجة واحدة أو حاجة مش بنقدر نعدها.
There are → لما بتتكلم عن أكتر من حاجة أو حاجة بنقدر نعدها.
أمثلة من الحوار:
"There's a famous old castle in the centre." → مكان واحد (قلعة)، فاستخدمنا there's.
"There are two or three museums." → أكتر من متحف، فاستخدمنا there are.
"There are beautiful mountains about an hour away." → جبال جمع، فاستخدمنا there are.
السؤال: Is there / Are there
لما عايز تسأل "في حاجة كذا؟" بتستخدم:
Is there → للمفرد (مكان واحد).
Are there → للجمع (أكتر من مكان).
لاحظ إيما في الحوار:
"Is there a beach nearby?" → بتسأل عن مكان واحد (شاطئ).
"Are there any museums?" → بتسأل عن أكتر من متحف.
"Are there any good markets?" → بتسأل عن أكتر من ماركت.
ملاحظة مهمة جداً
في السؤال بنحط any بعد is there أو are there، لكن في الإجابة بنستخدم a أو رقم. مثلاً:
"Are there any museums?" → "Yes, there are two or three."
"Is there a beach?" → "No, there isn't."
النفي المختصر
لاحظ توم لما قال: "No, there isn't." النفي المختصر بنستخدمه في الكلام العادي جداً:
isn't = is not
aren't = are not
نصيحة عملية
لما تيجي تصف مدينتك أو بلدك، حضّر 3 جمل باستخدام there is و there are. مثلاً:
"There's a big park in my city."
"There are two cinemas near my house."
"There is a beautiful beach about thirty minutes away."
كده هتثبت القاعدة في دماغك وتقدر تستخدمها في أي محادثة.

Pronunciation
Pronunciation
6
cards
When we make plural nouns in English, we usually add the letter -s to the end. But this letter can be pronounced in three different ways: /s/, /z/, or /ɪz/. In this lesson, we will look at the difference between /s/ and /z/, which is one of the most common pronunciation challenges for learners at B1 level.
The choice between /s/ and /z/ depends on the sound that comes before the plural ending. If the previous consonant is voiceless (you cannot feel your vocal cords vibrate), we say /s/. If the previous consonant is voiced (you can feel vibration in your throat), we say /z/. This is automatic in English — you don't need to think about it, only listen carefully. Common voiceless consonants are /p/, /t/, /k/, /f/. Common voiced consonants are /b/, /d/, /g/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /r/, /v/.
Look at these examples with places:
After voiceless: parks (/p/ + /s/), markets (/t/ + /s/), monuments (/t/ + /s/)
The spelling is the same in every case, but the sound is different. This is why "There are two museums" and "There are two markets" sound quite different to a native speaker.
How do you make these two sounds? Put the tip of your tongue close to the roof of your mouth, just behind your teeth. For /s/, push air out without vibrating your vocal cords. Your throat stays still. For /z/, do the same thing but turn on your voice — you should feel a clear buzz in your throat and a louder sound. You can test this yourself: put one hand on your throat. Say "parks" — your hand should be still. Now say "bars" — your hand should vibrate. The vibration means you are using your voice, which makes it a /z/ sound.
In this lesson's vocabulary, pay attention to the final sound of each plural noun. Listen carefully to the audio, and try to feel the difference between words like parks and bars, or cats and kids. With practice, you will be able to hear and produce these sounds naturally. Many learners mix up these two sounds, especially in fast speech — don't worry if it takes time to master them, because even a small improvement will make your English much easier to understand.
When we add -s to make a plural, the sound depends on the previous consonant. After voiceless sounds like /p/, /t/, /k/, /f/, we say /s/. After voiced sounds like /b/, /d/, /g/, /l/, /m/, /n/, we say /z/. To feel the difference, put your hand on your throat — no vibration means /s/, vibration means /z/.

In the final speaking activity, you will have a short conversation about places to visit. You will use there is and there are to describe what is in a city, and you will ask questions to find out about new places. This is one of the most common situations where learners need to use English — meeting someone from another country, asking about their city, or recommending places in your own.
Here are some useful phrases for the conversation:
English
Function
What places are there to visit here?
Asking about attractions
I'd recommend visiting…
Suggesting a place
Is there a ___ near here?
Asking if a place exists
There is a great museum in the centre.
Describing a place
Are there any good restaurants?
Asking about places (plural)
Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
Short answers
When you speak, remember these tips: use is with singular nouns (a museum, a beach); use are with plural nouns (museums, beaches, parks); use any in negative sentences and questions ("Are there any…?"); and speak slowly and clearly, especially with the plural endings /s/ and /z/.
In the model dialogue, pay attention to how the speakers use the phrases naturally. They don't say every word perfectly — they use short forms like "there's" for "there is" and "isn't" for "is not". This is normal in spoken English. In your own conversation, you can use these short forms to sound more natural.
In the roleplay at the end of this section, you will play a tourist visiting a new city. The AI will play a local person. Your goal is to ask about places to visit, listen to the recommendations, and use there is/are to describe places you know. Try to ask at least three questions and give at least two recommendations. Don't worry if you don't use every phrase — just try to have a natural conversation. Good luck! Remember: a confident conversation is better than a perfect one. Even if you make mistakes, the other person will probably understand you, and you will learn something new.
What places are there to visit here? — بتسأل بيها عن الأماكن السياحية الموجودة في المدينة.
I'd recommend visiting… — بتقترح بيها مكان على حد، ودي طريقة مهذبة وطبيعية.
Is there a ___ near here? — بتسأل لو فيه مكان معين موجود قريب منك.
Are there any good restaurants? — بتسأل عن أماكن بالجمع، وبتستخدم any عشان السؤال يبقى مفتوح.
الفرق بين is و are (قاعدة مهمة جداً)
القاعدة بسيطة وسهلة: لو بتتكلم عن مفرد (مكان واحد)، استخدم is. لو بتتكلم عن جمع (أكتر من مكان)، استخدم are.
There is a beautiful park. (فيه حديقة جميلة)
There is a small art gallery. (فيه جاليري صغير)
There are lovely cafés and restaurants. (فيه مقاهي ومطاعم جميلة)
There are several museums in the centre. (فيه عديد متاحف في المركز)
متى تستخدم any؟
كلمة any بنستخدمها في الأسئلة والجمل المنفية قبل الاسم الجمع. مثلاً: Are there any good restaurants in the old town? أو Is there any museum near the castle? لو عايز تقول إن مفيش، بتقول There aren't any أو There isn't a.
الصور القصيرة (Short forms) بتخلّيك طبيعي أكتر
في الكلام العادي، الناس مش بتقول الجملة كاملة، بيختصروها. بدل there is بيقولوا there's، وبدل is not بيقولوا isn't، وبدل are not بيقولوا aren't. لما تستخدم الصور دي، كلامك هيبقى زي الكلام الحقيقي.
There's a museum next to the castle.
There aren't many cafés in this area.
Isn't there a park nearby?
نصيحة قبل ما تبدأ التسجيل
في الدور اللي هتعمله مع الذكاء الاصطناعي، حاول تسأل على الأقل 3 أسئلة، وتدّي على الأقل اقتراحين. ركّز على استخدام there is للمفرد وthere are للجمع، ومتقفش من الأخطاء — المحادثة الطبيعية دايماً أحسن من المحادثة المثالية.
Listen to this short model conversation. Notice how the speakers use there is and there are.

When we talk about places to visit, we use a small group of common nouns. These words describe the most popular attractions in a city or town: museums where you can see old objects and art, beaches where you can relax, markets where you can buy food and gifts, and historical buildings such as castles and cathedrals. In this lesson, you will learn eight key words for places of interest.
Each one is a noun, and you can use it with there is or there are depending on whether the noun is singular or plural. For example, you can say "There is a museum" but "There are two museums." You can also describe them with adjectives: an old castle, a famous monument, a busy market. Some of these words are very common in everyday conversation, while others are mainly used in the context of travel and tourism.

متحف
There is a small museum near the bridge.
art gallery
noun
معرض فني
There are two art galleries in the old town.
beach
noun
شاطئ
There is a lovely beach five kilometres away.
market
noun

There is a busy market on Saturday mornings.
castle
noun
قلعة
There is an old castle on top of the hill.
cathedral
noun
كاتدرائية
There is a huge cathedral in the centre.
monument
noun
نصب تذكاري
There is a tall monument in the square.
park
noun
حديقة
There are beautiful parks in the city.
Notice that art gallery is a two-word noun. Both words are important — you cannot say just "gallery" when you mean a place for art, and "market" usually means a place where you can buy things, not just any place with goods. The word monument often refers to a statue or structure built to remember a person or event, and you will find them in most large cities.
Try to think of one place you know that matches each word. For example, is there a park in your town? Is there a beach near your home? Asking and answering these questions is great practice for the rest of the lesson, because you can describe your own town in English. These eight words will appear throughout today's lesson. You will hear them in the listening dialogue, and you will use some of them in your own speaking practice. Try to remember not only the meaning but also how to pronounce the final sound — we will look at this in the pronunciation section. Pay attention to which words are countable (a castle, two castles) and which are typically used in the singular (a beach, a park).
القاعدة المهمة: there is / there are
كل الكلمات دي nouns (أسماء)، وبنستخدمها مع there is لو المكان واحد، ومع there are لو الأماكن أكتر من واحد:
There is an old castle on top of the hill. (في قلعة قديمة فوق التل)
There are two art galleries in the old town. (في معرضين فنيين في المدينة القديمة)
There is a famous museum in the city centre. (في متحف مشهور في وسط المدينة)
ملاحظات لازم تفتكرها
art gallery كلمتين لازم ييجوا مع بعض، مش بنقول gallery لوحدها لما نتكلم عن الفن تحديداً.
market معناها مكان للبيع والشراء، مش أي مكان فيه بضاعة.
monument غالباً بيبقى تمثال أو حاجة اتبنت عشان نفتكر شخص أو حدث مهم.
beach وpark عادةً بنستخدمهم في المفرد.
