When we talk about the environment, we often need to give our opinion, agree or disagree politely, and suggest actions. Knowing the right phrases for each function will make your conversations sound natural and confident. Below is a table of useful phrases organised by function. Try to learn three or four of them today, and use them in your own conversations this week.

In British English, people often use softeners when they disagree — for example, 'I'm not sure about that' or 'I see your point, but …'. This is more polite than saying 'I disagree' or 'You're wrong'. When we suggest something, we often use 'Why don't we …?' or 'We should …'. Both are friendly and open to discussion.

In the dialogue below, you will hear two friends, Emma and Tom, using some of these phrases to talk about plastic waste in their local park. Listen for the phrase 'I think we should …' and the phrase 'What can we do to help?' — both are very common when discussing environmental issues. You will also hear 'I agree with you' and 'If we don't act now, things will get worse' — useful phrases for showing concern.

After the dialogue, you will match each phrase to its function, and then put a short conversation in the right order. Finally, you will record yourself saying two of the key phrases out loud. Speak clearly, and use the 'th' sounds you practised in the pronunciation section.

Function Useful phrase
Giving your opinion In my opinion, ... / I believe that ...
Expressing concern I'm really worried about ... / The main problem is ...
Suggesting solutions We should ... / Why don't we ...?
Agreeing I agree with you. / I think so too.
Disagreeing politely I'm not sure about that. / I see your point, but ...
Asking for ideas What can we do to help?
Talking about consequences If we don't act now, ...
Ending with hope Together, we can make a difference.

(Key Functions):

  • إبداء الرأي (Giving your opinion): لو عايز تقول رأيك، استخدم "I think..." أو "In my opinion, we should use less plastic". الفعل think معناه "أعتقد"، وبتيجي قبل الجملة الرئيسية. لما بتقول "I think we should..." ده بيدي رأيك بشكل مهذب.

  • التعبير عن القلق (Expressing concern): للتعبير عن خوفك على حاجة، استخدم "I'm really worried about the animals" أو "The main problem is plastic bottles". لاحظ إن worried about معناها "قلقان على"، وكلمة main معناها "رئيسي".

  • اقتراح الحلول (Suggesting solutions): عندك طريقتين. الأولى: "We should organise a clean-up day" (لازم نعمل يوم تنظيف). والتانية: "Why don't we ask the school to help?" (ليه ما نسألش المدرسة تساعدنا؟). الأولى بتأكد إن الحل مهم، والتانية بتدعوا للنقاش.

  • الموافقة (Agreeing): بدل ما تقول "Yes" وبس، استخدم "I agree with you" أو "I think so too". ده بيخلي كلامك أكثر طبيعية.

  • الكلام عن النتائج (First Conditional): الجملة "If we don't act now, things will get worse" دي مثال على الـ First Conditional. القاعدة بسيطة: If + present simple, will + verb. يعني: If we don't act (لو معملناش حاجة) things will get worse (الأمور هتزيد سوءً).

نصيحة مهمة: في الإنجليزي البريطاني (UK English)، لما تكون مش موافق على حد، استخدم عبارات ناعمة ولطيفة زي "I'm not sure about that" أو "I see your point, but..." بدل ما تقول "You're wrong" على طول. ده بيخلي الحوار محترم ومريح للطرفين.

حاول تستخدم الجمل دي في كلامك اليومي عشان تتعود عليها.

Emma and Tom meet in the park and start talking about the rubbish they have seen there.

  1. E
Emma Hi Tom. Look at all this rubbish in the park.
  2. T
Tom I know. It's terrible. The main problem is plastic bottles.
  3. E
Emma I'm really worried about the animals here.
  4. T
Tom I think we should organise a clean-up day.
  5. E
Emma I agree with you. Why don't we ask the school to help?
  6. T
Tom Good idea. If we don't act now, things will get worse.
Required

Match each function to the correct phrase from the dialogue.

  4. I agree with you. If we don't act now, things will get worse.
  5. Good idea. I'll tell the others.
Required

Read this phrase aloud. It is a great way to give your opinion about an environmental issue.

In my opinion, we should use less plastic.

Required

Read this question aloud. It is a perfect way to start a conversation about the environment.

What can we do to help the environment?

Listening

Listening

5 cards

In this listening activity, you will hear two friends, Emma and Tom, talking about an article they read about plastic in the rivers near their town. Tom is worried about the number of plastic bottles he sees in the park, and Emma is thinking about what they can do to help. They are standing outside their school, on their way home.

Before you listen, take a moment to predict: do you think Emma and Tom will decide to take action, or do you think they will just talk? Your prediction will help you listen for the answer. Then listen for three key ideas: the main problem they talk about, the solution Tom suggests, and the plan they make at the end.

The conversation has ten turns. Tom speaks five times, and Emma speaks five times. You do not need to understand every word — focus on the key information, just like in real life. If you miss one word, keep listening. Often the next sentence helps you understand the one before.

After the dialogue, you will answer one question for the gist (the general idea), one question for specific information (a fact from the conversation), and one question for detail (a phrase or sentence from the conversation). Read each question carefully, and choose the answer that fits what you actually heard — not what you think might be true.

كلام عن البيئة - شرح الدرس

الدرس ده عبارة عن محادثة بين اتنين أصحاب، إيما وتوم، بيحكوا عن مشكلة مهمة جداً: تلوّث البلاستيك في الأنهار والحدادق. المحادثة دي حلوة لأنها بتورّي إزاي الإنجليزي بيتكلم بيه عن مشكلة حقيقية وإزاي نقدر نقترح حلول ليها.

أهم القواعد في الحوار

الـ Question Tags (الأسئلة المذيلة): لما توم قال "It's really worrying, isn't it?" دي اسمها question tag. بنستخدمها لما نحتاج نأكد إن الشخص التاني موافق علينا أو عايزين رأيه. القاعدة بسيطة: لو الجملة affirmative (موجبة)، الـ tag بيكون negative (سالب)، والعكس صحيح.

الجمل الشرطية - First Conditional: إيما قالت "If we don't act now, things will get worse." دي First Conditional. بنستخدمها للأشياء اللي ممكن تحصل في المستقبل لو حصل شرط معيّن. الصيغة: If + present simple, will + base verb.

"should" للاقتراحات: توم قال "The government should also do more" وكمان "We should all do that". كلمة should بتنفع لما نقترح أو نصح بحاجة لازم تتعمل.

التعبير عن العادات - Present Simple: لما توم قال "I always take a reusable bag to the shop" استخدم present simple عشان بيعبّر عن عادة يومية. ممكن نضيف always, usually, every week عشان نوضح إنها عادة ثابتة.

عبارات للتعبير عن القلق والاهتمام:

  • "I'm really concerned about it" - أنا قلقان بجد بخصوص الموضوع ده
  • "It's really worrying" - الموضوع ده مقلق فعلاً
  • "I think so too" - أنا كمان فاكر كده
  • "What can we do to help?" - إيه اللي نقدر نعمله عشان نساعد؟

مفردات مهمة عن البيئة

  • plastic - بلاستيك
  • reusable bag - شنطة قابلة لإعادة الاستخدام
  • bottles - زجاجات
  • to act - يتصرف
  • to get worse - يسوء أكتر
  • the government - الحكومة

نصيحة للاستماع

الحوار فيه 10 جُمل. ما تحاولش تسمع كل كلمة من أول مرة. ركّز على الفكرة العامة الأول (إنهم قلقانين من البلاستيك)، بعدين اسمع تاني عشان تلتقط التفاصيل. وده نفس اللي بنعمله في الحياة الحقيقية!

Emma and Tom are at school, talking about an article on plastic pollution.

  1. E
Emma Tom, did you see that article about plastic in the rivers?
  2. T
Tom Yes, I did. It's really worrying, isn't it?
  3. E
Emma I'm really concerned about it. The main problem is that we use too much plastic.
  4. T
Tom I agree. Every week I see plastic bottles in the park near my house.
  5. E
Emma What can we do to help?
  6. T
Tom Well, I always take a reusable bag to the shop. We should all do that.
  7. E
Emma That's a good idea. If we don't act now, things will get worse.
  8. T
Tom I think so too. The government should also do more.
  9. E
Emma I agree, but I think people can make a difference too.
  10. T
Tom That's true. We can organise a clean-up day in the park next month.
Required

What is the conversation mainly about?

  • A new football team at school
  • Plastic pollution and what to do about it
  • A holiday by the river
Required

Tom says he always takes a reusable bag to the shop.

Required

Tom suggests organising a clean-up day in the park ___.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation

6 cards

English has two 'th' sounds that are written with the same letters but produced differently. The first, /θ/, is voiceless — your vocal cords do not vibrate, and you push a lot of air out of your mouth. The second, /ð/, is voiced — your vocal cords vibrate, and the sound is softer. Many of the words we use in this lesson contain one of these sounds, so it is worth practising both before you start.

To make either sound, place the tip of your tongue gently between or just behind your upper front teeth. Let the air flow over the top of your tongue. You should feel the air, and you may see a small push of breath. This is normal, and it is one of the easiest ways to know you are making the sound correctly.

Try the /θ/ sound in words like think, three, bath, month and north. Hold a thin piece of paper in front of your mouth when you say these words. The paper should move because /θ/ is an aspirated sound with a strong flow of air. If the paper does not move, your tongue is probably too far back in your mouth.

Now try the /ð/ sound in words like the, this, that, they, breathe and clothes. Put your fingers on your throat and say 'the' — you should feel a small vibration. This is voicing. The mouth position is almost the same, but the air is softer and the sound is a little longer.

A common mistake is to replace these sounds with /t/ or /d/. Instead of 'tink', say think with the tongue between the teeth. Instead of 'dis', say this with the tongue between the teeth. With a little practice, both 'th' sounds will start to feel natural. You will hear them in phrases like the weather, this month, three weeks and they think.

Spelling Sound Example words
th /θ/ voiceless think, three, bath, month, north, breath
th /ð/ voiced the, this, that, they, breathe, clothes

ده الصوت اللي بتعمله لما تقول the أو this أو that أو they أو breathe.

  • the weather - الجو
  • this month - الشهر ده
  • three months - تلات شهور
  • they think - هم فاكرين
  • breath - نَفَس
  • clothes - هدوم

الغلطة الشائعة

كتير من الناس بيقولوا "tink" بدل "think"، أو "dis" بدل "this". الحل بسيط: متنساش تطلع طرف لسانك بين سنانك. مع شوية تمرين، الصوتين هيبقوا طبيعيين ومن غير ما تفكر فيهم.

The English 'th' has two sounds. /θ/ is voiceless (no vibration, more air). /ð/ is voiced (vibration, softer). Both use the tip of the tongue between or just behind the upper front teeth. The main difference is whether your vocal cords vibrate.

Required

Which word do you hear?

  • thin
  • this
Required

Read this sentence aloud. Notice the 'th' in 'think', 'the' and 'weather' — they are different sounds.

I think the weather is changing.

Required

Read this sentence aloud. Put the tip of your tongue between your teeth for the 'th' in 'This' (voiced) and the 'th' in 'the' (voiced).

This is a serious problem for our planet.

Required

Read this sentence aloud. The first 'th' (in 'Three') is /θ/ voiceless, and the 'th' in 'they' is /ð/ voiced.

Three months have passed since they started.

Reading

Reading

5 cards

When you read a longer text in English, it helps to use a strategy. The strategy for this lesson is skimming for gist followed by scanning for detail. Skimming means reading quickly to get the general idea. You do not need to understand every word — just look at the title, the first sentence of each paragraph, and the last sentence. Scanning means looking for specific information, like a number, a name or a date.

Key words to know before you read:

  • waste (noun) — rubbish, things that people throw away
  • reduce (verb) — to make something smaller or less
  • campaign (noun) — a plan to achieve something, usually over a period of time
  • reusable (adjective) — something you can use again, not single-use

Read the short article below. It comes from a school newspaper in the UK. The article is in five short paragraphs. When you read, ask yourself: Who is doing something? What are they doing? Why? And what is the result? These four questions will help you find the gist quickly.

After you read, you will answer one question about the gist (the general idea) and two questions about details (specific information from the text). You may read the article more than once. First, skim for the gist. Then, scan for the details. This is how good readers work in their own language too.

  • Who is doing something? (مين اللي بيعمل حاجة؟)
  • What are they doing? (بيعمل إيه؟)
  • Why? (ليه؟)
  • What is the result? (إيه النتيجة؟)

لو عرفت إجابة الأسئلة دي، يبقى أنت فهمت الـ gist صح.

المفردات المهمة قبل ما تقرا

  • waste (اسم) - الزبالة أو الحاجات اللي الناس بيرموها. مثال: plastic waste in the oceans (البلاستيك اللي بيترمي في المحيطات).
  • reduce (فعل) - يعني تقلل حاجة أو تصغرها. مثال: We need to reduce pollution (لازم نقلل التلوث).
  • campaign (اسم) - خطة منظمة عشان تحقق حاجة، غالبا بتمتد على فترة طويلة. مثال: a campaign to plant more trees (حملة لزراعة شجر أكتر).

Our town, our planet

Every minute, one million plastic bottles are bought around the world. Many end up in our rivers and oceans, harming fish, birds and other wildlife.

In Greenfield, a group of students decided to act. They started a 'plastic-free Friday' campaign at their school. Every Friday, students bring lunch in reusable containers and use water bottles instead of plastic ones.

The campaign worked. In six months, the school reduced its plastic waste by 40 percent. Other schools have started to copy the idea.

'Anyone can make a difference,' says 15-year-old Mia. 'We don't need to wait for the government.'

The students are now planning a clean-up day at the local river next month. Are you ready to join them?

Required

What is the article mainly about?

  • A new type of plastic bottle
  • A student campaign to reduce plastic waste
  • A holiday by the river
Required

The school reduced its plastic waste by 40 percent in six months.

Required

What are the students planning next month?

  • A trip to another country
  • A clean-up day at the local river
  • A new school building
Lesson Review

Lesson Review

2 cards

Well done! You have reached the end of the lesson. In this lesson, you have practised giving opinions on environmental issues, listening to a conversation about plastic pollution, reading a short article, speaking in a live roleplay, and writing your own short article. You have also practised the two 'th' sounds in English: /θ/ (voiceless) and /ð/ (voiced).

Take a moment to think about what you have learned. Look at the list below. Can you do these things now? Tick the boxes that are true for you. If some are still difficult, you can return to that part of the lesson and try again. The more you practise, the more confident you will become.

  • I think... (أنا أعتقد) — I think plastic pollution is a big problem.
  • In my opinion... (في رأيي) — In my opinion, we should recycle more.
  • I believe... (أنا أؤمن إن) — I believe governments should act faster.
  • I agree / I disagree (موافق / مش موافق) — I agree that people need to change.

الجميل في الجمل دي إنها بتدّيك مساحة تقول رأيك من غير ما تحكم على حد.

صوتا الـ "th" في الإنجليزي

من أهم الحاجات اللي اتدربت عليها في الدرس هم صوتا الـ th، لأن كتير من الناطقين بغير الإنجليزي بيحوّلوهم لحروف تانية. الصوتين مختلفين:

صوت ١: /θ/ (الـ voiceless — من غير اهتزاز في الزور) بيظهر في كلمات زي:

  • think (أفكّر) — I think we need to change.
  • throw (أرمي) — Don't throw plastic in the sea.
  • thanks (شكرًا)
  • thought (فكرة / ظن)
  • three (تلاتة)

صوت ٢: /ð/ (الـ voiced — مع اهتزاز في الزور) بيظهر في كلمات زي:

  • the (أداة التعريف)
  • this (ده) و that (داك)
  • there (هناك)
  • these (دول) و those (أولئك)
  • they (هم)

تلميحة عملية: حط إيدك على زورك وانطق الكلمتين. لو حسيت بذبذبة خفيفة، يبقى الصوت /ð/. لو مفيش ذبذبة، يبقى /θ/.

المهمة الكتابية والـ Review Cards

دلوقتي معاك review cards تقدر تراجع بيها كل الكلمات والجمل اللي اتعلمتها. وفي writing task هتكتب مقال قصير من عندك عن قضية بيئية تهمك، سواء plastic pollution أو air pollution أو deforestation (إزالة الغابات). حاول تستخدم على الأقل تلات جمل من اللي اتعلمتها زي In my opinion... و I believe... و I think.... متقلقش من الغلط — كل ما تكتب أكتر، كل ما تتحسن أكتر.

Speaking

Speaking

6 cards

In this section, you will practise giving your opinion about an environmental issue. A good opinion is more than just 'I think …'. It usually has three parts: your opinion, a reason and an example or suggestion. Listen to the model conversation, and notice how Emma and Tom use all three parts.

In British English, we often use opinion phrases at the start of a sentence to make our view clear. Common phrases include In my opinion, I believe that, I think and From my point of view. After the opinion, we usually give a reason with because or as. We can then suggest an action with We should or Why don't we …?.

Here is a useful phrases list for the speaking task. Try to use at least three of these in the roleplay at the end of the section.

Function Useful phrase
Giving your opinion In my opinion, ... / I believe that ... / I think ...
Giving a reason ... because ... / ... as ...
Giving an example For example, ... / For instance, ...
Suggesting an action We should ... / Why don't we ...? / Let's ...
Talking about the future If we don't act now, things will get worse.
Ending positively Together, we can make a difference.

You will first listen to a short model conversation, then read a key model sentence, then record two of your own sentences aloud. Finally, you will have a live conversation with the AI about an environmental issue in your town. Try to use the phrases from the table, and try to keep going for at least three turns. If you do not understand something, it is fine to say 'Sorry, could you repeat that?'

  • In my opinion, ... (في رأيي)
  • I believe that ... (أنا مؤمن إن)
  • I think ... (أنا أفتكر)

إزاي تدّي سبب

بعد ما تقول رأيك، لازم تشرح ليه. بنستخدم because أو as عشان نربط السبب بالرأي:

  • "I think we should use less plastic because it harms animals."

إزاي تدّي مثال

عشان كلامك يبقى أقوى، ضيف مثال حقيقي. أشهر ال-phrases:

  • For example, ...
  • For instance, ...

إزاي تقترح فعل

لو عايز تحث الناس على حاجة، عندك اختيارات كتير:

  • We should ... (لازم نعمل)
  • Why don't we ...? (ليه ما نعملش؟)
  • Let's ... (يلا نعمل)

الكلام عن المستقبل

لما تتكلم عن مشكلة ممكن تكبر لو ما اتعاملناش معاها، بنستخدم First Conditional. القاعدة بسيطة: لو في أول الجملة حطينا If + مضارع بسيط، في التاني بنحط will + الفعل:

  • "If we don't act now, things will get worse."

إنهاء الكلام بإيجابية

دايماً حاول تخلّي المحادثة تخلُص بنبرة أمل. مثلاً:

  • "Together, we can make a difference." (مع بعض، نقدر نعمل فرق)

مثال من الدرس

في المحادثة، Emma بتقول: "In my opinion, the biggest environmental problem in our town is plastic waste." و Tom بيرد: "I agree. I see plastic bottles in the park every day." شُف إزاي Tom وافق بأدب وبعدين ضاف مثال من حياته. لما تسجّل، حاول تستخدم على الأقل 3 من الـ phrases اللي فوق. وفي المحادثة مع الـ AI، متوقفش بعد أول جملة، وخليك طبيعي — ولو مش فاهم حاجة قول: "Sorry, could you repeat that?"

Listen to this short model conversation. Notice how Emma and Tom use opinion phrases, reasons and suggestions.

  1. E
Emma In my opinion, the biggest environmental problem in our town is plastic waste.
  2. T
Tom I agree. I see plastic bottles in the park every day.
  3. E
Emma Why don't we start a recycling group at school?
  4. T
Tom That's a good idea. If we don't act now, things will get worse.

In my opinion, the biggest environmental problem in our town is plastic waste.

This is a strong model sentence. It uses 'In my opinion' to give a clear opinion, and it focuses on a specific local issue. The stress is on OPINION, BIGGEST and PROBLEM.

Required

Read the model sentence aloud. Pay attention to the stress on the key words, and to the 'th' in 'the' and 'this' (if you change it).

In my opinion, the biggest environmental problem in our town is plastic waste.

Required

Read your own sentence aloud. You have used a new opinion phrase ('I think'), a suggestion ('we should') and a reason ('because').

I think we should use less plastic because it harms animals.

Required

You are talking to your friend Tom about an environmental issue. He has just told you about a news story on plastic in the rivers. Give your opinion, agree or disagree with him, and suggest one action your town could take. Try to use phrases like 'In my opinion', 'I think', 'I agree' and 'Why don't we ...'. Keep the conversation going for at least three turns.

Writing

Writing

5 cards

In this section, you will write a short article (about 50–60 words) about an environmental issue in your town. Below is a model article written by a B1 student. Read it carefully, and notice the structure: a clear opinion, a description of the problem, a suggestion and a strong ending.

Model article:

Save the Park

In my opinion, the local park is in danger. The main problem is rubbish. People leave plastic bottles and bags everywhere. If we don't act now, animals will suffer. We should organise a clean-up day. Everyone can help, and together we can make a difference.

Using opinion phrases

Notice how the model uses clear opinion phrases: In my opinion, The main problem is, If we don't act now and We should. These phrases help the reader follow your argument. They also make your writing sound organised and confident. When you write your own article, try to use at least three of these phrases.

Plan for your own article (3 short paragraphs):

  1. Paragraph 1 — State the problem in your town. Use In my opinion or The main problem is.
  2. Paragraph 2 — Suggest a solution. Use We should or Why don't we ….
  3. Paragraph 3 — End with a strong sentence. Use If we don't act now, … or Together, we can ….

In the steps below, you will check that you can spot the opinion phrases in the model. Then you will write your own short article and read it aloud. Aim for about 50–60 words, in three short paragraphs. You do not need to use perfect English — focus on getting your ideas across clearly.

هنتكلم النهاردة عن جزء الكتابة في الـ lesson عن المشاكل البيئية. المطلوب منك تكتب مقال قصير، من 50 لـ 60 كلمة، عن مشكلة بيئية في مدينتك أو منطقتك. المقال لازم يكون من 3 فقرات صغيرة، كل فقرة ليها وظيفة مختلفة.

الهيكل بتاع المقال (3 فقرات):

  • الفقرة الأولى: بتعرف فيها بالمشكلة. استخدم جملة زي In my opinion (في رأيي) أو The main problem is (المشكلة الأساسية هي...). مثال من الـ model: In my opinion, the local park is in danger.
  • الفقرة التانية: بتقدم فيها حل للمشكلة. استخدم We should (لازم نعمل) أو Why don't we... (ليه ما نعملش...). مثال: We should organise a clean-up day.
  • الفقرة التالتة: بتختم بيها بجملة قوية وفيها أمل. استخدم If we don't act now, ... (لو ما اتصرفناش دلوقتي...) أو Together, we can ... (مع بعض، نقدر نعمل...). مثال: Together, we can make a difference.

الـ opinion phrases اللي هتساعدك في الكتابة:

  • In my opinion — دي طريقة محترمة تقول بيها رأيك من غير ما تبان aggressive
  • The main problem is — بتوضح أكتر إيه اللي مضايقك بالظبط
  • If we don't act now — بتحط urgency، يعني بتقول إن الموضوع مستعجل

Writing strategy: Using opinion phrases

When you write an article giving your opinion, use clear phrases to introduce each new idea. Good phrases include:

  • In my opinion, ... — to start with your view
  • The main problem is ... — to describe the issue
  • We should ... or Why don't we ...? — to suggest a solution
  • If we don't act now, ... — to talk about consequences
  • Together, we can ... — to end with hope

These phrases are like signposts. They tell the reader, 'Here is my opinion', 'Here is the problem' and 'Here is what we can do'. Use at least three of them in your own article.

Required

The model article uses the phrase 'In my opinion' in the first sentence.

Required

Which phrase does the model use to suggest a solution?

  • I don't like the park.
  • We should organise a clean-up day.
  • Last week I went shopping.

Now write your own short article about an environmental issue in your town. Use at least three opinion phrases from the lesson, for example 'In my opinion', 'The main problem is' and 'We should'. When you finish, read your article aloud. This sentence is a model opening line — you can adapt it for your own article.

In my opinion, the biggest environmental problem in my town is plastic waste.
