Lesson Review

15 cards

Welcome to the Unit 10 review! In this lesson, you will refresh three important areas from the unit: learning vocabulary (words about study and education), conditionals (sentences with if for different situations), and modals (helper verbs like can, should, must). By the end, you will feel more confident using these forms together when you speak and write.

Conditionals recap

Conditionals are sentences with two parts: an if-clause (the condition) and a main clause (the result). Each of the four types talks about a different kind of situation. Study the table carefully:

Type If-clause Main clause Use
Zero If + present simple present simple facts / always true
First If + present simple will + base verb real / possible future
Second If + past simple would + base verb unreal / unlikely now or in the future
Third If + had + past participle would have + past participle unreal past (regret)

Read the example sentences aloud. If you heat water to 100°C, it boils (zero — a fact). If it rains tomorrow, I will stay at home (first — a real possibility). If I had a year free, I would learn Spanish (second — an imagined situation). If she had revised, she would have passed the test (third — a regret about the past). Notice the verb tenses carefully. Mixing tenses in the wrong way is the most common mistake.

Modals recap

Modals are small helper verbs that come before another verb. They do not change form (no -s, -ing or -ed) and they are always followed by the base form. Here are the main modals and what they mean:

Modal Meaning Example
can / can't ability / permission She can speak three languages.
could / couldn't past ability / polite request I couldn't understand the lecture.
should / shouldn't advice You should take more notes.
must / mustn't strong obligation / prohibition Students mustn't use phones in class.
may / might possibility It may rain this afternoon.
have to external obligation I have to wear a uniform.

Modals are very useful together with conditionals. For example: If you join a study group, you should make faster progress (first conditional + modal of advice).

Learning vocabulary

The unit focused on words about learning and education. These collocations are common in spoken and written English: attend a class / a lecture / a seminar, revise for an exam (British English), take notes during a lesson, memorise facts or vocabulary, concentrate on your work, fail / pass an exam, graduate from university, get a degree in something, drop out of a course, and a subject (e.g. maths, history, biology). Pay attention to the prepositions: we say graduate from university, drop out of a course, and concentrate on your work. Using the right preposition makes your English sound much more natural.

Writing strategy: Using conditionals and modals

For this unit's writing task, you will write a blog post about the best way to learn a language. To make your writing more interesting, combine conditionals with modals to give advice. Use the zero conditional to give general rules: If you read every day, you learn new words. Use the first conditional with a modal to give future advice: If you join a language club, you will speak more fluently. Use modals like should, must or can to make your tips strong and clear: You should speak English every day. Try to include at least two or three conditional sentences with modals in your blog post. This will show what you have learned and make your writing more expressive.

If you heat water to 100°C, it boils
  • First conditional: لموقف ممكن يحصل في المستقبل. مثال: If it rains tomorrow, I will stay at home
  • Second conditional: لموقف متخيل أو مش محتمل. مثال: If I had a year free, I would learn Spanish
  • Third conditional: لموقف في الماضي وبيندم عليه. مثال: If she had revised, she would have passed the test

الأفعال المساعدة (Modals) دي أفعال صغيرة بتيجي قبل الفعل التاني ومش بتتغير خالص (مفيش -s ولا -ed ولا -ing) ولازم بعدها الـbase form بتاع الفعل على طول. أهمهم:

  • can / can't: القدرة أو الإذن. مثال: She can speak three languages
  • should / shouldn't: النصيحة. مثال: You should take more notes
  • must / mustn't: واجب قوي أو منع. مثال: Students mustn't use phones in class
  • may / might: الاحتمال. مثال: It may rain this afternoon
  • have to: واجب من بره. مثال: I have to wear a uniform

كلمات الدراسة (Learning vocabulary) اتعلمت كلمات كتير عن الدراسة، بس أهم حاجة إنك تركز على الـprepositions (حروف الجر) الصح:

  • attend a class / a lecture / a seminar
  • revise for an exam (British English)
  • take notes during a lesson
  • graduate from** university
  • drop out of** a course
  • concentrate on** your work

إزاي تربطهم مع بعض؟ الجمال الحقيقي إنك تقدر تخلط conditionals مع modals في جملة واحدة. مثلاً: If you join a study group, you should make faster progress — هنا عندك first conditional مع modal of advice. لما تستخدمهم مع بعض، كلامك بيبقى طبيعي جداً.

المهمة المطلوبة (Writing task) هتكتب blog post عن أفضل طريقة لتعلم لغة. استخدم conditionals زي If you practice every day, you will improve، واستخدم modals زي You should listen to podcasts وYou mustn't be afraid of mistakes. واستخدم الكلمات الجديدة زي revise وtake notes وconcentrate. ابدأ بكروت المراجعة عشان تثبت المعلومة، وبعدين روح للمهمة وحط كل حاجة في سياق. بالتوفيق!

PREPARE — Before you write, brainstorm your ideas. Think about:

• Which language did you learn, and why did you start? • What study habits work well for you? (For example: revising notes, watching videos, speaking with friends.) • What one piece of advice would you give to a beginner?

Write 4–6 short notes in English. You will use them in your blog post.

WRITE — Write a short blog post (80–120 words) called 'The Best Way to Learn a Language'. Include:

• A short introduction (what language, and why you started learning it) • Two or three tips (study habits that really work) • A short conclusion (one last piece of advice)

Try to use at least two conditional sentences (zero or first) to give advice. Use modals such as should, must or can to make your tips clear and strong.

REVIEW — Check your writing before you finish. Ask yourself:

• Did I use 2–3 conditional sentences correctly? (Check the verb forms.) • Did I use modals (should, must, can) with the base form of the verb? • Did I include learning vocabulary (revise, take notes, attend, graduate…)? • Are capital letters and full stops correct? • Did I write between 80 and 120 words?

Read your blog post aloud to check the flow. If something sounds wrong, change it.
