At B2 level, you need more than just will and going to to talk about the future. English has several verb forms that can express future meaning, and choosing the right one makes your English sound much more natural and precise. In this section we look at four important future forms: will, going to, the Present Continuous, and the Future Perfect.

Will is used for:

  • predictions based on what we think or believe: I think she will get the job.
  • spontaneous decisions made at the moment of speaking: — Oh no, I forgot to send my CV. — Don't worry, I will email it for you.
  • offers and promises: I'll help you with your application.

Going to is used for:

  • plans and intentions decided before the moment of speaking: I'm going to apply for an internship next month.
  • predictions based on present evidence: Look at his experience — he's going to get the promotion.

The Present Continuous is used for:

  • fixed arrangements in the near future, with a clear time and often a place: I'm meeting my manager at 3pm tomorrow.

The Future Perfect is used for:

  • actions that will be completed before a point in the future: By next year, I will have finished my training.

Here is a summary table:

Form Use Example
will + infinitive predictions, decisions, offers, promises I will send my CV tomorrow.
going to + infinitive plans, intentions, predictions with evidence I am going to study law.
Present Continuous fixed arrangements I am starting my new job in September.
Future Perfect actions finished before a future point By 2027, I will have worked here for five years.

A useful phrase to remember is by + a future time, which often comes with the Future Perfect: by next year, by the time I'm 30, by this time next week. With the Present Continuous, the time and place are usually clear, or the listener already knows the arrangement. With going to, the plan is real, but the exact time and place may not be fixed yet.

Let's compare three sentences that look similar but mean different things:

  • I'm going to be a doctor. (This is my general plan for the future.)
  • I'm meeting the doctor at 4pm. (This is a fixed appointment.)
  • I will have qualified by 2028. (The qualification is finished before 2028.)

A common mistake at B2 is to use will for everything. Try instead to choose the form that best matches the meaning: a promise? a plan? an arrangement? a completed action in the future?

إزاي تتكلم عن مستقبلك المهني بالإنجليزي؟

في مستوى B2، مش لازم تقول will لكل حاجة عن المستقبل. الإنجليزي عنده أربع صيغ مختلفة، وكل واحدة ليها شغل معين. لما تختار الصيغة الصح، كلامك يبقى أدق وأحلى بكتير.

1. الـ will + infinitive

دي الصيغة الكلاسيكية اللي بنستخدمها عشان:

  • التوقعات والأحكام الشخصية: I think she will get the job
  • القرارات اللحظية اللي بتاخدها في اللحظة: I'll email it for you
  • الوعود والعروض: I'll help you with your application

2. الـ going to + infinitive

دي بتستخدم لما يكون عندك خطة أو نية محددة من قبل لحظة الكلام:

  • I am going to apply for an internship next month
  • وكمان للتوقعات المبنية على دليل قدامك: Look at his experience — he's going to get the promotion

3. الـ Present Continuous

مفاجأة شوية! بس المضارع المستمر بيتستخدم للـ arrangements الثابتة اللي عندها وقت ومكان واضحين:

  • I am meeting my manager at 3pm tomorrow
  • I am starting my new job in September

4. الـ Future Perfect

دي الصيغة اللي بتقول إن حاجة هتخلص قبل نقطة معينة في المستقبل:

  • By next year, I will have finished my training
  • By 2027, I will have worked here for five years

كلمة by السحرية

لاحظ كلمة by اللي بتيجي مع الـ Future Perfect. لما تشوف by next year أو by this time next week، ده غالباً علامة إن الجملة هتستخدم will have + past participle.

إزاي تختار الصيغة الصح؟

السر هو إنك تسأل نفسك: أنا بتكلم عن وعد؟ خطة قديمة؟ موعد ثابت؟ ولا حاجة هتخلص في المستقبل؟ كل إجابة بتدلك على الصيغة المناسبة. الغلطة الشائعة في B2 إنك تقول will على طول. حاول دايماً تطابق الصيغة مع المعنى.

في التمارين اللي جاية، ركّز على الكلمات الدالة زي: tomorrow, next month, by next year. وسأل نفسك: هل ده قرار مفاجئ؟ ولا خطة من زمان؟ ده هيخليك تجاوب صح.

I'm going to apply for a marketing internship next month.

A plan that has already been decided.

By this time next year, I will have completed my training.

An action that will be finished before a point in the future.

Listening

Listening

5 cards

In this section you will listen to a short conversation between two friends, Tom and Emma, who are talking about what they are going to do after they finish their studies. Before you listen, think about the topic: when people talk about their career plans, what kinds of things do they usually mention?

You will probably hear:

  • the kind of job they want to do
  • the company or industry
  • when things will happen
  • how they feel about their plans

As you listen, try to follow the gist first (the general idea of the conversation) and then listen a second time for specific information (names, dates, places, decisions). Don't worry if you don't catch every word — focus on the key points.

Useful vocabulary you will hear in the dialogue:

  • graduate scheme — a training programme for people who have just finished university
  • application — a formal request for a job
  • internship — a short job to gain experience
  • flat — a home (British English)
  • head office — the main office of a large company

Listen to the dialogue once for the general idea, then read the questions and listen again if you need to. The questions are in the same order as the information appears in the conversation, which makes them easier to follow.

بطلبة الكلام عن الـ Career Plans

في السيكشن دي، هتسمع محادثة بين اتنين أصحاب، Tom و Emma، بيكلموا عن خططهم بعد ما يخلصوا الجامعة. المحادثة دي غنية بأزمنة المستقبل المختلفة، وده اللي هنركز عليه.

الأزمنة المستخدمة في الـ Future

المحادثة بتستخدم كذا شكل من أشكال المستقبل، وكل واحد ليه استخدام مختلف:

  • Going to للخطط والنيّات الشخصية:
  • "I'm going to apply for a graduate scheme" — هنا Tom بيقول إن عنده نية إنه يتقدم فعلاً.
  • "I'm going to rent a small flat in Camden" — Emma بتخطط تسكن في شقة في Camden.
  • Will للقرارات اللحظية أو التوقعات:
  • "I'll have heard back from them" — ده اسمه Future Perfect، وده بيوصف حاجة هتخلص قبل وقت معين في المستقبل.
  • Future Continuous للأسئلة عن خطط الشخص في المستقبل:
  • "Will you be moving to London?" — Tom بيسأل Emma لو هيبدأ تنتقل على لندن في المستقبل القريب.
  • Present Continuous للترتيبات المؤكدة:
  • "I'm submitting my application next week" — ده ترتيب ثابت، فبنستخدم المضارع البسيط.
  • "I'm starting in September" — نفس الفكرة، Internship ليها تاريخ محدد.

كلمات مهمة لازم تحفظها

  • Graduate scheme: برنامج تدريبي للناس اللي خلّصت الجامعة.
  • Application: طلب التوظيف الرسمي.
  • Internship: شغل قصير المدى عشان تاخد خبرة.
  • Flat: شقة، وده المصطلح البريطاني.
  • Publishing house: دار نشر.
  • Head office: المقر الرئيسي للشركة.
  • Marketing agency: شركة متخصصة في التسويق.

حاجة حلوة في الـ Dialogue

لاحظ إزاي Emma عملت self-correction لما قالت: "What about you — sorry, I mean what about ME?". ده أسلوب طبيعي جداً في الكلام الإنجليزي لما حد ينسى يكلم عن نفسه. كمان "Fancy that!" معناها يا للعجب، وده تعبير بريطاني أصيل مش هتلاقيه في American English بسهولة.

نصيحة: اسمع المحادثة مرة عشان الـ gist، ومرة تانية ركز على الأماكن والتواريخ.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation

6 cards

In English, not all syllables in a word have the same weight. One syllable is always stronger, or stressed, and the others are weaker. Learning which syllable to stress is essential for clear pronunciation, and it can also change the meaning of a word. Saying REcord (a written account) instead of reCORD (to make a recording) can completely confuse your listener.

In two-syllable words, there is a useful pattern that B2 learners should know: many nouns and adjectives are stressed on the first syllable, while many verbs are stressed on the second syllable. Look at the words below.

Word Noun / Adjective (stress) Verb (stress)
record REcord (a written account) reCORD (to make a recording)
increase INcrease (a rise) inCREASE (to go up)
decrease DEcrease (a fall) deCREASE (to go down)
progress PROgress (movement forward) proGRESS (to move forward)
present PREsent (a gift, or happening now) preSENT (to give formally)

Notice the pattern: nouns and adjectives often keep the stress on the first syllable, while verbs move the stress to the second syllable. This is a regular feature of English, but there are exceptions, so it is always worth checking a new word in a dictionary if you are not sure.

In career vocabulary, this pattern appears in words like record (as in work record or track record) and progress (as in career progress). When you are speaking about a career, you will often need to use these as nouns, so the stress usually falls on the first syllable.

How do you make the stressed syllable stronger? Make it:

  • longer in time
  • louder
  • higher in pitch (your voice rises a little)

The unstressed syllable is often said quickly, with a very short and weak vowel, sometimes called a schwa (/ə/). The schwa is the most common vowel sound in English and appears in almost every multi-syllable word.

Listen carefully to the example words. Try saying them out loud yourself: REcord, INcrease, DEcrease, PROgress, PREsent. Then try the verb form of each one and notice how the stress moves.

النطق في الإنجليزية: الضغط على المقطع (Word Stress)

  • REcord (اسم، يعني سجل مكتوب) — reCORD (فعل، يعني يسجل صوت)
  • INcrease (اسم، يعني زيادة) — inCREASE (فعل، يعني يزود)
  • DEcrease (اسم، يعني نقص) — deCREASE (فعل، يعني ينقص)
  • PROgress (اسم، يعني تقدم) — proGRESS (فعل، يعني يتقدم)
  • PREsent (اسم، يعني هدية أو حالي) — preSENT (فعل، يعني يقدم بشكل رسمي)

He has an impressive work REcord وقارنها بـ Please reCORD the meeting. هتحس بفرق واضح في ضغطك. وافتكر دايمًا: لو مش متأكد، ارجع للقاموس وشوف العلامة اللي فوق الحروف.

To stress a syllable: make it longer, louder and a little higher in pitch. The other syllable becomes short and weak. In two-syllable words, nouns usually stress syllable 1, verbs usually stress syllable 2.

Required

Listen to the sentence. In the word 'record', which syllable is stressed?

  • The first syllable (REcord)
  • The second syllable (reCORD)
Required

Say the word. Stress the second syllable: ca-REER.

career

Required

Say the word with stress on the first syllable. This is the noun — a forward movement.

PROgress

Required

Now say it as a verb, with stress on the second syllable. It means 'to go up'.

Reading

Reading

6 cards

In this section you will read a short career profile of a person who changed jobs to follow her real passion. Career profiles are a common type of text at B2 level: you find them on company websites, in magazines, and in the lifestyle sections of newspapers. They usually include a short personal story, a few facts (dates, places, numbers), and a piece of advice at the end.

Reading strategy: scanning for specific information

When you read a profile, you do not need to understand every word. Instead, you scan the text to find the specific information the question asks for. Scanning means moving your eyes quickly down the page looking for keywords, names, dates, or numbers. It is different from skimming, where you read quickly to get the general idea.

To scan well:

  1. Read the question first and underline the keyword (a name, a date, a place, a number).
  2. Move your eyes down the text looking for that word or a similar one.
  3. When you find it, read the sentence around it carefully.

Key words from the text

Word Meaning
baking making bread, cakes and pastries
degree a university qualification
staff the people who work in a company
advice what someone tells you to do
direction the way something is going or developing

Read the profile below, then answer the questions. Try to scan for the specific information each question asks for.

She started baking when she was twelve.
  • degree: دي الشهادة الجامعية. ممكن تكون BA أو BSc أو MA. وبياخدوا فيها من ٣ لـ ٧ سنين. مثال: She got a degree in business.
  • staff: الموظفين أو الفريق اللي شغال في الشركة أو المكان. لو الشركة فيها staff كبير، يبقى عددهم كتير. مثال: The staff are very friendly.
  • advice: يعني نصيحة. لما حد يديك advice، بيقولك رأيه في اللي المفروض تعمله. مثال: Her advice is to follow your heart.
  • direction: معناها الاتجاه أو المسار. لو شغلك ماشي في direction معين، يبقى إنت ماشي في طريق واضح. مثال: Her career took a new direction.

نصيحة قبل ما تبدأ

خد وقتك في السؤال الأول كويس، لأن فهمك للسؤال هو اللي هيوجه عينك في النص. ولو مش لاقي الكلمة بالظبط، جرب تقرا الجملة اللي قبلها والتي بعدها - أحيانًا الإجابة بتكون مكتوبة بكلمة تانية.

Maya Patel always loved baking. After finishing her degree in chemistry, she worked in a hospital laboratory for three years. 'I was good at my job, but I wasn't happy,' she explains.

Then, in 2021, she took a six-month cake-making course. It changed everything. Two years later, she opened her first bakery in Bristol, and by next spring she will have opened a second one in Bath.

'I am going to take on two more part-time staff for the new shop,' she says. 'By the end of next year, I hope to have three shops in total.'

Her advice? 'Don't be afraid to change direction. Life is too short for a job you don't enjoy.'

القصة بتاعت مايا

النص اللي قدامك بيحكي عن Maya Patel، بنت خلصت degree in chemistry (شهادة في الكيمياء) وعملت في hospital laboratory تلات سنين. بس من وهي صغيرة كانت بتحب baking، يعني صناعة الحلويات والكحك. قررت تعمل change direction (تغير مسارها) وخدت كورس صناعة كيك لمدة ٦ شهور، وافتتحت أول bakery ليها في Bristol.

Future Perfect - المستقبل التام

أهم grammar في النص ده هو الـ Future Perfect. بنستخدمه لما نحكي عن حاجة هتكون خلصت قبل وقت معين في المستقبل. بيتكون من:

Subject + will have + past participle (V3)

  • By next spring, she will have opened a second bakery in Bath.
  • By the end of next year, I hope to have three shops in total.

لاحظ إن الجملة التانية فيها hope to have، يعني 'بتمنى إنها يبقى عندها'. الـ hope دايما بيجي بعده to + infinitive.

going to للخطط المسبقة

في النص كمان: "I am going to take on two more part-time staff". الـ going to بنستخدمه لما يكون في خطة موضوعة من قبل، مش قرار لحظي. هنا مايا قررت من زمان إنها هتوظف ناس جداد، فاستخدمت going to.

كلمات مهمة لازم تحفظها

  • take on (staff) = يوظف / يضم موظفين
  • part-time = شغل جزئي
  • in total = في الإجمالي
  • be afraid to = يخاف إن
  • change direction = يغير مساره
  • degree = شهادة جامعية
  • life is too short = الحياة قصيرة أوي

نصايح للقراءة

  1. Skim بسرعة عشان تاخد general idea
  2. Scan ودور على specific information زي الأرقام والأماكن (2021, Bristol, Bath, three years)
  3. Read for detail عشان تلاحظ الـ grammar اللي فوق

الفكرة من النص إن الواحد مينفعش يفضل في شغل مش مبسوط بيه، وlife is too short for a job you do not enjoy.

  • A hospital worker who is going to retire.
Required

Maya worked in a hospital laboratory before she changed career.

Required

Speaking

Speaking

7 cards

In this final section, you will practise talking about your own career plans. First, let's look at some useful phrases that native speakers use in this kind of conversation. Learning these as chunks will help you sound more natural and confident.

Useful phrases for talking about future plans

Phrase Use
I've decided to … announcing a decision you have already made
I'm planning to … talking about something you intend to do
I'm going to … + verb a real plan or intention
I'll probably … a likely future action (less certain)
I'm hoping to … a wish, but not a guarantee
By next year, I'll have … using the Future Perfect
In the long term, I want to … talking about your general direction

Example answer: I have just finished my studies, so I am going to apply for internships in marketing. By this time next year, I will have completed my first placement, and in the long term I want to work as a brand manager.

When you speak, try to:

  • use a range of future forms, not just will
  • add a time expression to make your plans clearer (next year, in two years, by 2030)
  • give reasons for your plans (because I want to, in order to gain experience)
  • speak at a natural speed, with appropriate stress on key words

Listen to the model dialogue below, then practise the key sentences, and finally have a short conversation with the AI.

التكلّم عن خطط الشغل في الإنجليزي

في السيكشن دي هتتعلم ازاي تتكلم عن خططك المهنية بشكل طبيعي زي الإنجليز الأصليين. السر هنا إنك تستخدم كذا صيغة زمنية للمستقبل مش بس will، عشان كلامك يبقى متنوع وسلس.

صيغ المستقبل اللي لازم تعرفها

  • I have decided to… — لما تبقى خدت قرار خلاص ومفيش رجوع فيه. مثلاً: I have decided to apply for a PhD.
  • I'm planning to… — للتعبير عن نية حقيقية بس لسه مش متنفذة. مثلاً: I'm planning to apply for a graduate scheme in marketing next year.
  • I'm going to + verb — خطة حقيقية أو نية قوية. مثلاً: I am going to apply for internships in marketing.
  • I'll probably… — حاجة محتملة بس مش مضمونة. مثلاً: I'll probably move abroad in two years.
  • I'm hoping to… — أمنية أو رغبة، مش ضمان. زي ما Daniel قال: I'm hoping to get a job with a renewable energy company.
  • In the long term, I want to… — للتكلم عن الاتجاه العام مش خطوة معينة. مثلاً: In the long term, I want to work as a brand manager.

الـ Future Perfect (will have + past participle)

ده زمن مهم جداً لما تيجي تخطط لمكانتك في المستقبل البعيد. بتقوله مع by + وقت معين:

  • By this time next year, I will have finished my first internship.
  • By 2030, I will have started my own business.

إزاي تخلّي كلامك طبيعي

  1. نوّع في الصيغ — مش كل جملة بـ will. اخلط بين going to وplanning to وhoping to.
  2. حط تعبير زمني عشان الخطط تبقى واضحة: next year, in two years, by 2030, next June.
  3. ادّي سبب لخطتك: because I want to gain experience أو in order to work in a big company.
  4. اتكلم بسرعة طبيعية مع stress على الكلمات المهمة.

ملحوظة من الديالوج

لاحظ إن Aisha عملت تصحيح لنفسها بشكل طبيعي لما قالت 'What about you — sorry, what about ME?' — ده شيء بيحصل في الكلام الحقيقي، فلما بتتكلم متقلقش لو صححت نفسك، ده بيخلّي كلامك يبان طبيعي.

A model conversation: two old school friends, Aisha and Daniel, meet for the first time in two years and talk about what they are doing now and what they plan to do next.

  1. A
Aisha So, Daniel, what are you doing these days?
  2. D
Daniel I'm doing a master's in engineering. I'm finishing it next June.
  3. A
Aisha Nice! And what are you planning to do after that?
  4. D
Daniel I'm hoping to get a job with a renewable energy company. In the long term, I'd love to start my own business.
  5. A
Aisha That sounds brilliant. What about you — sorry, what about ME? Any plans for the future?

I'm planning to apply for a graduate scheme in marketing, and in the long term I want to work abroad.

Notice the two future forms in one sentence: I'm planning to … (intention) and I want to … (long-term goal).

Required

Read this sentence aloud about your own future plan. Use a confident, natural rhythm.

I'm planning to apply for a graduate scheme in marketing next year.

Required

Read this sentence aloud. Remember the Future Perfect: will have + past participle.

By this time next year, I will have finished my first internship.

Required

You meet an old school friend for coffee. They ask about your current studies or work, your plans for the next year, and your long-term career goal. Try to use at least two different future forms in your answers.

In this lesson we will look at a set of useful words for talking about jobs, careers and professional life. Being able to describe a job clearly — what the work involves, what qualifications you need, and where you see yourself in the future — is an important skill at B2 level, especially in speaking and writing tasks. Many exam questions at B2 ask you to compare jobs, talk about ambitions, or describe a typical working day, so the vocabulary in this block will be useful again and again.

Many of the words in this block often appear together in fixed combinations, or collocations, such as dream job, career path, career prospects, promotion opportunities and CV review. When you learn a new word, it is a good idea to learn the common combinations it appears in. This helps your English sound more natural and helps you avoid word-by-word translation from your own language.

Below are eight key words for the topic of career plans. Read each one carefully, look at the part of speech, the meaning, and the example sentence.

Word Part of speech Meaning (Arabic) Example
career noun the long-term work you do in your life / مسار مهني She has had a long career in medicine.
profession noun a type of job needing special training / مهنة Nursing is a demanding profession.
ambition noun something you really want to achieve / طموح His ambition is to run his own company.
qualification noun an exam or certificate that proves your ability / مؤهل You need a teaching qualification for this job.
internship noun a temporary job to gain experience / تدريب The internship lasted three months.
promotion noun moving to a better position at work / ترقية She got a promotion last year.
freelance adjective working for yourself, not a company / مستقل He works as a freelance designer.
CV noun a document listing your education and work / سيرة ذاتية Please send your CV with the application.

Notice that career and profession are similar, but not identical. A career is the whole story of your working life; a profession is the type of work itself. You can have a career in a profession, for example: He has had a long career in the legal profession.

Freelance is usually an adjective, but it can also be a verb (to freelance) or a noun (a freelance). When describing your work, it is common to say I am a freelance journalist or I freelance as a designer.

Finally, remember that CV is the British English spelling. American English usually uses résumé, which has an accent and is pronounced /ˈrezjuːmeɪ/. In an international context, both forms are understood, but in a UK exam, CV is the correct choice.

كلمات خطط المهنة - Career Plans Vocabulary

He has had a long career in the legal profession (هو عنده مسيرة مهنية طويلة في مجال المحاماة).

كلمة freelance المرنة

كلمة freelance دي كلمة ذكية لأنها بتشتغل كحال (adjective)، كفعل (verb)، وكاسم (noun):

  • كحال: I am a freelance journalist (أنا صحفي شغال freelancer)
  • كفعل: I freelance as a designer (بشتغل freelancer كمصمم)
