The Secret Society of the Somerset Levels

The Discovery

Liam had always loved the Somerset Levels. The flat green land, criss-crossed by rivers and ditches, was his playground. Every weekend, he cycled along the narrow paths, watching birds and listening to the wind in the reeds. But one misty October morning, something unusual caught his eye.

As he rounded a bend near Glastonbury Tor, he spotted a group of people in dark green jackets. They were planting something in the wet earth—small trees, maybe? Liam slowed his bike and hid behind a hedge. The group worked quickly, their voices low. Then, just as suddenly as they had appeared, they vanished into the mist.

Curious, Liam pedalled closer. The ground was disturbed, but there were no trees. Instead, he found a small metal badge half-buried in the mud. It was shaped like a heron, with strange symbols around the edge. He pocketed it, his heart pounding.

The Invitation

That evening, Liam examined the badge under his desk lamp. The symbols looked ancient, almost like runes. He snapped a photo and sent it to his friend, Mia, who was obsessed with local history.

“Where did you get this?” she texted back immediately. “It’s the mark of the Wetland Watchers. They’re a secret group—no one knows who they are, but they’ve been protecting the Levels for centuries.”

Liam’s stomach twisted. A secret society? Right here in Somerset? Before he could reply, his phone buzzed again. This time, it was an unknown number.

“You found our badge. Meet us at the old mill at dusk if you want to know more.”

Liam’s hands shook. Should he go? What if it was dangerous? But the mystery was too tempting to ignore.

The Choice

The old mill was crumbling, its wooden beams sagging under years of rain. Liam hesitated at the door, but a voice called out, “Come in, Liam. We’ve been expecting you.”

Inside, the group from the morning sat around a table. Their leader, an elderly woman with sharp eyes, smiled. “We are the Wetland Watchers. For generations, we’ve kept the Levels safe—from pollution, from developers, from those who don’t understand its value.” She slid a green jacket across the table. “We could use someone like you.”

Liam looked at the jacket, then at the badge in his palm. The Levels were his home. He knew every path, every hidden corner. But was he ready to keep such a big secret?

“I need time to think,” he said finally.

The woman nodded. “Of course. But remember—some secrets are worth keeping.”

As Liam cycled home under the stars, he made his decision. The Levels deserved protectors. And maybe, just maybe, he was one of them.
