The Secret of the Seaside Sandcastle

Every August, the Brighton Sandcastle Competition drew artists from across the south coast. This year, twelve-year-old Leo had spent weeks practising in his back garden with buckets, spades, and a secret ingredient—his grandad’s old recipe for “sand glue.” On the morning of the contest, the beach was already buzzing with families, seagulls, and the salty tang of the English Channel.

Leo’s castle was a three-tiered masterpiece: a drawbridge made of driftwood, towers topped with seashell flags, and a moat that actually held water. The judges, clipboards in hand, nodded approvingly as they passed. “Best in show, I reckon,” whispered a woman in a sunhat. Leo grinned and adjusted his cap, which was slightly too big and kept slipping over his eyes.

The Discovery

Just as the judges were about to announce the winner, a gust of wind sent Leo’s cap tumbling across the sand. He chased it, tripped over a buried spade, and landed right on top of his own castle. There was a loud crack. The crowd gasped. Leo scrambled up, expecting to see a pile of rubble—but the castle was still standing. Only one small tower had broken open, revealing a hollow space inside.

“What on earth…?” Leo reached in and pulled out a tiny metal box, no bigger than a matchbox. It was rusted shut, but when he pried it open with his fingernail, a small brass key tumbled into his palm. Engraved on it were the words Pier Vault 12.

The Mystery Unlocked

That evening, Leo and his grandad sat at the kitchen table, examining the key under a lamp. “Pier Vault 12,” Grandad mused. “That’d be the old amusement arcade on the West Pier. Been closed since the storm of ’87, but the vaults beneath it are still there—if you know where to look.”

The next morning, they took the bus to the crumbling pier. Gulls wheeled overhead as they picked their way through broken planks to a rusted door marked Storage. The key turned with a satisfying click. Inside, the vault was damp and dark, but in the centre stood a wooden chest. Leo’s hands shook as he lifted the lid. Inside lay a faded photograph of a boy building a sandcastle—identical to Leo’s—and a note in spidery handwriting: “To the next dreamer. Keep building.”

Leo never did find out who’d left the key, but he won the competition that year. And every summer after, he returned to Brighton to build another castle—just in case someone else was searching for a little magic in the sand.
