He runs every morning. She goes to the gym after work. They often swim at the weekend. In this lesson we look at the present simple with he and she, and we add some adverbs of frequency to talk about habits and routines.

In the present simple, when the subject is he, she or it, we add -s (or -es) to the verb. We use this tense to talk about things people do every day, every week, or often. For example: he runs, she plays tennis, it works well.

Adverbs of frequency tell us how often something happens. Common adverbs are always, usually, often, sometimes and never. They usually come before the main verb but after the verb to be. Compare: She always runs in the morning, He usually goes to the gym, They sometimes swim at the weekend, I never jog in the evening.

Here is the full pattern for the present simple:

Subject Positive Negative Question
I / you / we / they run do not run Do you run?
he / she / it runs does not run Does he run?

For questions with he / she / it, we use does, and the verb returns to its base form. In negative sentences we use doesn't, and again the verb has no -s: She doesn't like running.

Common mistakes to avoid:

  • Do not say He run — say He runs.
  • Do not say She don't like — say She doesn't like.
  • Do not put the adverb after the object. She runs in the morning usually is wrong. Say She usually runs in the morning.

الـ Present Simple: ازاي تتكلم عن العادات الرياضية

أهلاً بيكم يا شباب! النهاردة هنشرح قاعدة مهمة جداً في الإنجليزي: ازاي تستخدم الـ present simple لما تتكلم عن العادات بتاعتك في الرياضة والتمارين.

القاعدة الأولى: ضيف s على الـ verb لما الـ subject يكون he أو she أو it

في المضارع البسيط، لما بتتكلم عن he أو she أو it، لازم تضيف s (أو es) في آخر الفعل. يعني:

  • He runs in the park every morning (هو بيجري في الحديقة كل الصبح)
  • She goes to the gym after work (هي بتروح الجيم بعد الشغل)
  • He plays tennis on Friday

  • She always runs in the morning
  • He usually goes to the gym
  • They often swim at the weekend
  • I never jog in the evening

الأخطاء الشائعة اللي لازم تتجنبها

  1. ما تقولش "he run" — قول "he runs".
  2. في الـ negative، استخدم doesn't وبعدها الفعل في صورته الأصلية من غير s. يعني "she doesn't like running"، مش "she doesn't likes".
  3. ما تحطش الـ adverb في آخر الجملة. "She runs in the morning usually" غلط. الصح: "She usually runs in the morning".

كده أنت جاهز للتمارين اللي تحت. ركز كويس على الـ s الزيادة ومكان الـ adverb في الجملة!

He runs in the park every morning.

She usually goes to the gym after work.

You will hear a short conversation between two friends, Liam and Sara. They are at the gym café after their workout. The café is quiet, and they are sitting at a table with cups of coffee, talking about how often they exercise and what they usually do. The conversation is friendly and natural, and it uses the present simple with lots of adverbs of frequency — perfect for this lesson.

Before you listen, think about these questions:

  • How often do you exercise?
  • What is your favourite kind of workout — running, weights, yoga, or something else?
  • Do you prefer to exercise alone, or with a friend?
  • Do you have a regular exercise routine, or do you just exercise when you have time?

As you listen, try to find three pieces of information:

  1. How often each person comes to the gym (every day, three times a week, etc.).
  2. What activities they usually do — running, weights, yoga, etc.
  3. One thing they have in common — a habit or activity they both enjoy doing.

Listening strategy: Listen the first time for the main idea (what is the conversation about in general?). Listen again for specific details — numbers, activities and days of the week. You do not need to understand every single word. Focus on the key verbs and the adverbs of frequency.

In the dialogue, watch carefully for these adverbs: usually, always, sometimes, never, every day. They are the words that tell you how often something happens. This will help you answer the questions after the conversation.

Adverbs of Frequency

  • every day = كل يوم

ترتيب الكلمات دي في الجملة مهم جداً:

الكلمة بتنحط قبل الفعل الرئيسي. مثلاً:

  • "I always go to the yoga class." (أنا دايماً بروح حصة اليوجا)
  • "I usually run on the treadmill for thirty minutes." (أنا عادةً بجري على جهاز المشي لمدة تلاتين دقيقة)
  • "I never run." (أنا عمري ما بجري)

بس لو الجملة فيها فعل to be (is, am, are)، الكلمة بتنحط بعده:

  • "It is very relaxing." (إنه مريح جداً)

السؤال اللي لازم تعرفه:

"How often do you come to the gym?"

Liam meets his friend Sara at the gym café after their workout.

  1. L
Liam Hi Sara! How often do you come to the gym?
  2. S
Sara Hi Liam! I usually come three times a week. How about you?
  3. L
Liam I come every day. I love morning exercise.
  4. S
Sara That's great! What do you usually do?
  5. L
Liam I usually run on the treadmill for thirty minutes, and then I do a workout with weights.
  6. S
Sara I never run. I always go to the yoga class.
  7. L
Liam Oh, I sometimes do yoga at the weekend. It's very relaxing.
  8. S
Sara Yes! I think a good exercise routine is important for fitness.
Required

What is the main topic of the conversation?

  • Their favourite food
  • Their exercise routine
  • Their work at the gym
Required

How often does Liam come to the gym?

  • Three times a week
  • Every day
  • Only at the weekend
Required

Sara says she never runs. She always goes to the ___ class.

When you add -s to a verb in the present simple (he runs, she plays, it works), the final sound is either /s/ or /z/. The sound depends on the sound that comes before the -s, not on the letter. This is why lifts ends in /s/ but lives ends in /z/ — the 't' and 'v' decide the sound.

The rule:

  • After voiceless sounds (p, t, k, f, th), the -s is /s/: walks, lifts, eats, hopes, sleeps.
  • After voiced sounds and vowels (b, d, g, l, m, n, r, v, w, all vowels), the -s is /z/: plays, goes, runs, swims, jogs, loves, drives, lives.

How to make the sound in your mouth:

For /s/ — put the tip of your tongue close to the back of your top teeth (the alveolar ridge). Push air out hard through the small gap. Do not use your voice. Touch your throat with your hand — you should not feel a vibration. Compare: 'ssss' like a snake.

For /z/ — put your tongue in the same place, but turn your voice on. Air still comes out, but now your vocal cords vibrate. Touch your throat — you feel a clear buzz. Compare: 'zzzz' like a bee.

Why it matters: native speakers can hear the difference between walks (/s/) and works (also /s/ here, but with a 'w' before it), and especially between plays (/z/) and place (/s/). Using the right sound makes your English clearer and more natural.

/s/ (voiceless) /z/ (voiced)
walks plays
eats goes
lifts runs
hopes swims
sleeps jogs

Listen carefully when a native speaker says she walks and she jogs — the endings are different, even though they both have an 's' in writing.

صوت الـ S والـ Z في آخر الأفعال

في الإنجليزي لما بتقول جملة في المضارع البسيط مع he أو she أو it، لازم تحط S في آخر الفعل، زي he runs أو she plays.

لما بتقول she walks وصوتها /s/، ده مختلف عن she jogs اللي صوتها /z/. لو قلتها غلط، الـ native speakers ممكن يفهموك غلط أو يحسوا إن نطقك مش طبيعي. الممارسة إنك تسمع وتكرر، وتستخدم كل جملة من التمرين اللي تحت. جرّب كده: she plays tennis every Saturday — ركز على الـ Z في plays. كمل التمرين وسمع نفسك كل مرة.

/s/: tongue behind the top teeth, push air out, no voice. /z/: same tongue position, but turn your voice on — you should feel a buzz in your throat.

Required

Now it is your turn to talk about exercise in English. You will use the present simple with he/she, the adverbs of frequency (always, usually, often, sometimes, never) and the vocabulary from this lesson.

Useful phrases to help you:

  • How often do you exercise? — A great question to start a conversation about fitness.
  • I usually go to the gym. — Add a number: three times a week, twice a week, every day.
  • I often run in the park. — Use often for things you do regularly.
  • I sometimes swim at the weekend. — Use sometimes for things you do now and again.
  • I never eat fast food. — Use never for things you do not do.
  • He always walks to work. — Use he to talk about a man. Remember: he walks (with -s).
  • She does a workout three times a week. — Use she to talk about a woman. Remember: she does (with -es).
  • I have a morning routine. — A useful sentence to describe your daily habits.

Tips for speaking well:

  • Speak slowly and clearly. It is better to speak clearly than to speak fast.
  • Use short sentences. I usually go to the gym. I sometimes run. I never skip exercise.
  • Add details. Numbers, days, places and times make your answer stronger: I run three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Practise the -s ending. Remember: he goes, she plays, he runs, she swims.

Listen to the model conversation first, then read the example sentence, then record your own sentences, and finally have a real conversation with the AI.

الكلام عن الرياضة واللياقة

في الجزء ده هنتعلم إزاي نتكلم بالإنجليزي عن العادات الرياضية بتاعتنا. الموضوع بسيط بس ليه قواعد مهمة لازم تركز عليها.

ظروف التكرار (Adverbs of Frequency)

دي كلمات بتقول قد إيه بنعمل الحاجة. ترتيبها في الجملة مهم جدًا:

  • always = دايمًا (100% من الوقت)
  • usually = عادةً (حوالي 80%)
  • often = كتير (حوالي 60%)
  • sometimes = أحيانًا (حوالي 30%)
  • never = أبدًا (0%)

في الجملة العادية، ظرف التكرار بييجي قبل الفعل الرئيسي:

  • I usually go to the gym.
  • She sometimes runs in the park.
  • I never eat fast food.

بس لو الجملة فيها am / is / are، ظرف التكرار بييجي بعدها:

  • She is always tired after the gym.

الـ -s مع he / she

لما تتكلم عن راجل أو ست، لازم تضيف -s أو -es للفعل. ركز في النطق:

  • He goes to the gym.
  • She runs three times a week.
  • He does a workout.
  • She plays tennis.

السؤال عن عدد المرات

عشان تسأل حد قد إيه بيعمل الحاجة، استخدم:

  • How often do you exercise?
  • How often do you run?

والرد بيكون عادةً برقم أو بوقت: twice a week، three times a week، every day، at the weekend.

جمل مفيدة تاني

  • I have a morning routine.
  • I run in the park at the weekend.
  • He always walks to work.
  • She does a workout three times a week.

نصيحة للمحادثة

تكلم بهدوء واستخدم جمل قصيرة. ضيف تفاصيل زي الأرقام والأيام والأماكن عشان إجابتك تبان أقوى. مثلًا بدل ما تقول I run، قول I run three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

دلوقتي جرّب تسجل صوتك وابدأ محادثة حقيقية مع الذكاء الاصطناعي!

Two friends talk about their exercise habits.

  3. A
Aisha That sounds good. What do you usually do there?
  4. O
Omar I usually run and sometimes I do a workout with weights.
  5. A
Aisha How often do you run?
  6. O
Omar I run twice a week. How about you?

I usually go to the gym three times a week.

This is a model sentence you can use to start your answer about exercise.

Required

Talking about exercise and fitness uses some very common English words. In this section you will meet eight key words about exercise, fitness and your workout routine. Read the table, then practise using the words.

Notice that some of these words can be a noun or a verb. Exercise is both: you can do exercise (noun) and you can exercise (verb). Work works the same way. Run is mainly a verb, but we also say a run as a noun: I go for a run in the morning.

You will often see these words together in collocations — fixed word partnerships that English speakers use every day. For example: go to the gym (not 'go to gym'), do a workout (not 'make a workout'), go for a run or go for a jog, have a routine (your morning routine, your exercise routine), stay fit or keep fit, and go swimming (verb + -ing form for sports).

Look at the swim row. We do not usually say I swim on Friday. We say I go swimming on Friday or I go for a swim on Friday. This is a common pattern for sports and exercise in English.

Workout is one word and means one session of exercise. You can also say work out (two words) as the verb: I work out at the gym. Routine is the regular set of activities you do — for example, my morning routine or my exercise routine.

Word Type Example
exercise noun / verb I exercise every day.
fitness noun Fitness is important for health.
gym noun She goes to the gym.
run verb He runs in the morning.
jog verb They jog in the park.
swim verb She swims on Fridays.
workout noun His workout lasts one hour.
routine noun A morning routine is good.

كلمات الرياضة واللياقة

في الدرس ده هنتكلم عن أهم ٨ كلمات بتستخدمها لما تحب تتكلم عن الرياضة واللياقة البدنية. الكلمات دي هتساعدك تقول إنك بتتمرن، وبتروح الجيم، أو بتعمل روتين يومي.

كلمات أساسية لازم تعرفها

  • exercise (تَمرين / يُمارِس): كلمة شغالة كـ noun وكـ verb. بتقول I exercise every day أو I do exercise every day.
  • fitness (لياقة): دي noun بس، وبتتقال عن الحالة العامة للجسم، زي Fitness is important for health.
  • gym (صالة رياضية): المكان اللي بتتمرن فيه. دايماً بتقول go to the gym مش go to gym.
  • run (يَركُض): verb، لكن ممكن تبقى noun كمان: I go for a run in the morning.
  • jog (يَهرول): يعني الركض البطيء والخفيف. go for a jog تركيبة ثابتة.
  • swim (يَسبَح): verb، لكن لما تتكلم عن الرياضة بتقول go swimming أو go for a swim.
  • workout (حِصّة تَمرين): noun وبيعني حصة تمرين واحدة، مش التمرين كله. الفعل بتاعها work out (كلمتين).
  • routine (روتين): المجموعة المنتظمة من الحركات اللي بتعملها. My morning routine أو my exercise routine.

حِكْم لغوية مهمة

في الإنجليزي، عندك شوية collocations يعني تركيبات ثابتة لازم تحفظها زي ما هي:
