When we give instructions in a recipe, we use imperatives. An imperative is the base form of the verb with no subject. We don't say 'you mix the flour' — we just say 'Mix the flour.' Imperatives are very common in recipes, manuals, signs, and short instructions. They are short, direct, and clear.
We can make positive or negative imperatives. A positive imperative tells someone to do something: 'Cut the onion.' A negative imperative tells someone NOT to do something. We use 'don't' + base verb: 'Don't add too much sugar.'
To put the steps in the right order, we use sequencing words (also called linkers or time words). They show the reader which step comes first, next, and last.
Sequencing word
Meaning
Example
First
step 1
First, preheat the oven to 180°C.
Next
step 2
Next, mix the butter and sugar.
Then
after next
Then, add the eggs.
After that
later
After that, pour in the milk.
Finally
the last step
Finally, bake the cake for 25 minutes.
Notice that in English recipes, each imperative usually starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. A recipe reads like a short list of commands. To make your instructions easy to follow, always use a sequencing word before the first imperative, and use a new sequencing word for each new step. A good recipe feels like a calm conversation: short, polite, and clear.
الإيمبيراتيف - إزاي بنتكلم في الوصفات
لما بتفتح وصفة أو أي manual بتلاقي الأوامر مكتوبة بشكل مباشر جداً. ده عشان بنستخدم حاجة اسمها imperatives يعني أفعال الأمر. الفكرة ببساطة: بدل ما نقول "you mix the flour"، بنقول على طول "Mix the flour." مفيش فاعل، مفيش you، بس الفعل في صورته الأساسية. وده بيخلي الوصفة سريعة وواضحة.
الأمر الإيجابي والأمر المنفي
في نوعين من الـ imperatives:
Positive imperative - لما تيجي تقول لحد اعمل حاجة، زي "Cut the onion." أو "Boil the water."
Negative imperative - لما تيجي تقول لحد ما يعملش الحاجة. وده بنعمله بـ don't + الفعل في صورته الأساسية، زي "Don't add too much salt."
كلمات الترتيب - Sequencing words
دي الكلمات اللي بتقول للقارئ الخطوة دي جاية فين بالظبط. من غيرها، القارئ مش هيفهم يعمل إيه الأول وإيه بعده.
First - أول خطوة، زي: First, preheat the oven.
Then - اللي بعدها على طول: Then, add the pasta.
Next - الخطوة اللي بعدها كمان: Next, mix the eggs.
After that - بعد كده بشوية: After that, pour the milk.
Finally - آخر خطوة في الوصفة: Finally, serve the food.
حاجات مهمة تاخد بالك منها
كل imperative بيبدأ بـ حرف كبير (capital letter) وبينتهي بـ full stop.
لازم دايماً تحط sequencing word قبل أول أمر في الوصفة.
مع كل خطوة جديدة، استخدم sequencing word جديد، عشان القارئ يحس إنه بيتقدم.
في التمارين اللي جاية، ركز على شكل الفعل. لو لقيت Don't يبقى ده negative imperative. لو لقيت First أو Then يبقى ده sequencing word. بص على الأفعال كلها ولاحظ إنها دايماً في الـ base form من غير ما تتصرف في أي زمن.
First, boil the water. Then, add the pasta.
Notice the verb forms. There is no 'you' before the verbs.
Don't add too much salt. The food is already salty.
This is a negative imperative. We use 'don't' before the base verb.
Required
Look at the positive imperative in the sentences above. What comes BEFORE the verb? Is there a subject?
Yes, the subject 'you'
Yes, the subject 'I'
No, there is no subject
Required
_____ the onions into small pieces.
Required
_____ the water. Then, add the tea bag.
Required
Which sentence is a correct recipe instruction?
Mixes the flour and water.
To mix the flour and water.
Mix the flour and water.
Required
Put the words in the correct order to make an instruction.
First,
boil
the
water.
Required
Drag the correct verb to complete each recipe instruction.
cut
bake
mix
add
First, the onions into small pieces.
Next, two eggs to the bowl.
Then, the flour and water.
After that, the cake for 25 minutes.
Required
In a recipe, we say 'You cut the onion' as an instruction.
Recipes use imperatives with no subject: 'Cut the onion.' Not 'You cut the onion.'

cards
In this section, you will hear a short conversation between two people. They are in a kitchen, cooking a meal together. Listen carefully — after the dialogue, you will answer some questions.
Before you listen, think about this: when you cook with a friend or family member, what do you usually say? You probably give instructions, ask for help, and talk about the order of the steps. Can you guess what Emma and Tom are going to cook? Listen and find out.
The speakers use sequencing words: 'First', 'Then', 'After that', 'Finally'. Listen for these words — they show the order of the recipe. They also use imperatives: 'break', 'add', 'mix', 'pour', 'put', 'cook'. These are all base verbs with no subject. Tom asks short questions like 'What do we do first?' and 'What about the cheese?' — these help the speaker stay on track.
After the dialogue, you will answer three questions. The first is about the main idea: what are they cooking? The second is a number: how many eggs do they need? The third is about the last step in the recipe.
While you listen:
Listen for the dish name: 'cheese omelette'.
Listen for the number: 'three eggs'.
Listen for the time: 'one more minute'.
Remember: you don't need to understand every word. Focus on the keywords. Cooking vocabulary and sequencing words will help you follow the recipe.
الحوار في المطبخ: وصفة أومليت بالجبنة
في الدرس ده هتسمع مكالمة بين Emma و Tom، وهما واقفين في المطبخ بيطبخوا مع بعض. Emma بتطلب من Tom يساعدها في العشاء، وبيقرروا يعمولوا cheese omelette يعني أومليت بالجبنة. من خلال الحوار هتتعلم كلمات مهمة جداً في وصف الطبخ.
كلمات الترتيب (Sequencing Words)
(Imperatives)
لما Emma بتوصف الخطوات، بتستخدم أفعال أمر — يعني بتقول للشخص التاني يعمل الحاجة من غير ما تحط you قبلها. خد بالك من الأفعال دي:
Break three eggs — اكسر تلات بيضات
Add a little salt — ضيف شوية ملح
Mix it — اخلطه
Pour the eggs into a hot pan — صبّ البيض في طاسة سخنة
Cook for one minute — اطبخ لمدة دقيقة
ده أسلوب الطبخ في الإنجليزي: فعل + الحاجة اللي هتعملها معاها، من غير فاعل.
الأسئلة اللي بيسألها Tom
Tom بيسأل أسئلة قصيرة عشان يفضل ماشي مع الوصفة. مثلاً:
What do we do first? — إيه اللي نعمله الأول؟
What do I do with the pan? — أعمل إيه في الطاسة؟
What about the cheese? — والجبنة؟
نصايح للاستماع
ركّز على اسم الأكلة، والأرقام، والوقت. مش لازم تفهم كل كلمة، بس لو سمعت first أو then أو after that، يبقى إنت فاهم الخطوة. الكلمات المفتاحية هي اللي بتفتحلك المعنى.

Today we look at the long English vowel sound /eɪ/. You can hear this sound in many common cooking verbs. It is a long 'ay' sound, like the letter A in the word 'name'.
How to make /eɪ/:
Open your mouth a little, with your lips relaxed.
Lift the front of your tongue up, just behind your top teeth.
Slowly close your mouth and lower your tongue as you make the sound.
The sound should be long: about twice as long as a short vowel like /æ/.
The /eɪ/ sound is in many recipe verbs:
Word
Sound
bake
/beɪk/
make
/meɪk/
take
/teɪk/
taste
/teɪst/
place
/pleɪs/
Don't confuse /eɪ/ with the short vowel /æ/. 'Bake' (long /eɪ/) and 'back' (short /æ/) are different words. 'Taste' (long /eɪ/) and 'test' (short /e/) are different words. Listen carefully to the length of the vowel.
Try saying each word slowly: /beɪk/, /meɪk/, /teɪk/, /teɪst/, /pleɪs/. Now say them again at normal speed. Your mouth should move from open to almost closed for each word. In British English, /eɪ/ is often clear and long — take your time.
When you give recipe instructions, these verbs are very common: 'First, bake the cake. Then, taste the soup. Finally, place the pan on the table.' Strong /eɪ/ sounds make your instructions clear and easy to follow.
bake /beɪk/ — يخبز
make /meɪk/ — يعمل / يعمّل
take /teɪk/ — ياخد
taste /teɪst/ — يتذوّق
place /pleɪs/ — يَحطّ / يَضع
جرّب بنفسك خطوة بخطوة
قول كل كلمة ببطء الأول: /beɪk/ ... /meɪk/ ... /teɪk/ ... /teɪst/ ... /pleɪs/
ركّز على حركة بقك من مفتوح لـ مفتوح شوية، وإن الصوت يطلع سلس من غير ما تقطعه
بعدين قولها بالسرعة العادية وركّبها في جُمل
لما تيجي تقول وصفة في المطبخ، الأفعال دي هتخلّي كلامك واضح وسهل الفهم على اللي بيستمع ليك. صوت الـ /eɪ/ القوي والممتد هو اللي بيخلي تعليمات الطبخ مريحة للأذن.
To make /eɪ/: open your mouth, lift the front of your tongue, then close your mouth slowly. The sound is long, like 'ay'. Try it now: bake, make, take, taste, place.

In this section, you will practise giving instructions out loud. First, you will hear a model conversation. Then you will repeat key sentences. Finally, you will have your own short conversation with the AI.
Useful phrases for giving instructions:
Phrase
When to use
First, ...
Start the recipe
Next, ...
The second step
Then, ...
After the next step
After that, ...
A later step
Finally, ...
The last step
Don't ...
A warning
You can also use short questions to check the listener:
'Do you have ... ?'
'How much ... ?'
'What do we do next?'
Tips for speaking:
Speak slowly and clearly.
Use the base form of the verb (imperative): 'Boil the water' (not 'You boil the water').
Pause after each step to give the listener time.
Smile! It helps your voice sound friendly.
In the model conversation, Anna asks Ben how to make tea. Ben gives her four steps, one at a time. Notice the sequencing words: First, Then, After that, Finally.
In the roleplay at the end, you will be the teacher. Your friend wants to make a simple dish — maybe tea, a sandwich, or a cheese omelette. Give them clear instructions using sequencing words and imperatives. Use the phrases from the table above.
Remember: a good recipe has clear steps in the right order. A good speaker says them calmly and gives the listener time to think. In the roleplay, take turns. First your friend asks a question. Then you answer with a step. Then they ask 'What next?' and you give the next step. This is how real cooking conversations work. You can use any simple recipe you like: tea, coffee, toast, a sandwich, an omelette, or a salad. The vocabulary in this lesson will help you: boil, mix, add, pour, bake, stir, recipe, ingredients. Don't worry about being perfect — just speak. The AI will help you.
مثلاً بتقول 'Boil the water' مش 'You boil the water'. تاني مثال: 'Add the sugar'، 'Pour the water'، 'Mix the ingredients'. الـ imperative بيبقى شكل بسيط ومباشر، وده بيخلّي كلامك قصير وواضح زي ما بتكلم مع حد في المطبخ فعلاً.
الأسئلة القصيرة اللي بيسألها اللي قدامك:
في الـ conversation اللي عملتها Anna مع Ben، Anna بتسأل أسئلة قصيرة عشان تخلّي Ben يكمّل خطوة خطوة. أسئلة زي:
'Then?' — يعني "وبعدين؟"
'After that?' — يعني "وبعدها؟"
ده بيخلّي الـ conversation طبيعي جداً، زي ما هتعمل في الـ roleplay.
في الـ roleplay:
إنت هتبقى المعلم، وصاحبك هيسألك إزاي يعمل حاجة بسيطة زي شاي أو ساندويتش. استخدم الـ sequencing words والـ imperative، وخد وقتك بين كل خطوة والتانية. متقلقش من الأخطاء، الـ AI هيساعدك.
Listen to a model conversation. Anna wants to learn how to make tea. Ben gives her clear, step-by-step instructions.

Cooking in English is easier when you know the right words. In this lesson we look at eight key words for reading and writing a recipe. These words appear in nearly every recipe in English, so they are very useful.
Look at the table. The first column is the English word. The second column is the part of speech: a noun (n) is a thing, a verb (v) is an action. The third column is a short meaning in your language. The fourth column is a short example sentence in English.
Word
Type
Meaning
Example
recipe
n
My mum has a great recipe for cake.
ingredients
n
We need five ingredients.
boil
v
Boil the water for tea.
mix
v
Mix the flour and water.
add
v
Add two eggs to the bowl.
pour
v
Pour the milk into the cup.
bake
v
Bake the cake for 30 minutes.
stir
v
Stir the soup with a spoon.
Notice the verbs: boil, mix, add, pour, bake, stir. These are all imperatives in the example sentences. They give you an action to do.Boil the water means heat the water until it is very hot and has bubbles.Stir the soup means move a spoon around in the soup.
The two nouns are recipe and ingredients. A recipe is a set of instructions for cooking a dish.Ingredients are the food items you need. For example, eggs, flour, and sugar are ingredients for a cake.
Try to read each example sentence out loud. Listen to the rhythm.Recipe verbs are usually one syllable: boil, mix, add, pour, bake, stir. They are short and direct — perfect for instructions. In the next step, you will match these words to their meanings. Listen to the audio for each word and try to remember both the sound and the meaning.
My mum has a great recipe for cake. (ماما عندها وصفة كيكة تحفة)
ingredients — يعني "المكونات"، يعني الحاجات اللي بتحتاجها عشان تعمل الأكلة زي البيض والدقيق والسكر. مثال: We need five ingredients. (محتاجين ٥ مكونات)
الأفعال (Verbs) 🔥
الـ ٦ كلمات التانية كلهم أفعال يعني حركات أو أوامر بنعملها:
boil — يغلي (لما تسخن المية لحد ما تعمل فقاعات). مثال: Boil the water for tea.
mix — يخلط. مثال: Mix the flour and water.
add — يضيف. مثال: Add two eggs to the bowl.
pour — يصب. مثال: Pour the milk into the cup.
bake — يخبز في الفرن. مثال: Bake the cake for 30 minutes.
stir — يحرك بالملعقة. مثال: Stir the soup with a spoon.
الأفعال الأمر (Imperative Verbs) ⚡
الـ ٦ أفعال دول كلهم بيبقوا في صيغة الأمر (Imperative)، يعني لما حد يقولك "Boil the water" ده معناه "اغلي المية". الفعل الأمر بيبقى شكله بسيط زي ما هو في القاموس، من غير ما تضيف حاجة. لاحظ إن كل الأفعال دي أغلبها مقطع صوتي واحد (one syllable)، يعني قصيرة وقوية وسهلة الحفظ.
جملة كاملة تربط الكلام 🗣️
"First, boil the water. Then, add the ingredients and stir." يعني: "أولاً، اغلي المية. بعدين، ضيف المكونات وحرك".
دلوقتي اسمع كل كلمة في الكروت اللي تحت، وقولها بصوتك عالي عشان تثبتها في ذاكرتك!
