The Little Red Hen

The little red hen finds some wheat seeds. "Who will help me plant these?" she asks.

"Not I," says the dog.

"Not I," says the cat.

"Not I," says the pig.

"Then I will plant them myself," says the little red hen. And she does.

She plants the seeds. She waters them every day. The wheat grows tall and yellow.

"Who will help me cut the wheat?" she asks. "Not I," say the dog, the cat and the pig. So she cuts it herself.

"Who will help me make the bread?" she asks. Again, they say no. So she mills the grain. She makes the dough. She bakes a lovely loaf.

The dog, the cat and the pig smell the bread. "Can we eat it?" they ask.

"You did not help me," says the little red hen. "But now we can all eat it together."

They are happy. The bread is warm and tasty. The little red hen is happy too.
