L'histoire

The Case of the Vanished Steam Fair

Every summer, the village of Little Marshwick waited for one special day. The travelling steam fair would roll in on its great iron wheels, filling the green with whistles, smoke, and the laughter of children. This year, the fair arrived on a Friday evening, and by Saturday morning, the whole village was buzzing.

Tom, a local boy of twelve, was the first to notice something was wrong. He had promised to help Mr. Higgins, the fair’s owner, polish the prize engine, The Iron Duchess. But when Tom arrived at the fairground, the engine was gone. Not just the engine—Mr. Higgins’ prized pocket watch, passed down from his grandfather, had vanished too.

“Blimey,” Tom muttered, scratching his head. “Who’d pinch a whole steam engine?”

He ran to find Constable Briggs, the village policeman, who was enjoying a cup of tea outside the post office. “It’s not just a theft, lad,” the constable said, setting down his mug. “It’s a mystery.”

Tom wasn’t so sure. He had seen a stranger lurking near the fair the night before—a man in a long coat, even though it was warm. The man had been asking odd questions about The Iron Duchess. Tom told the constable, who stroked his chin thoughtfully. “Hmm. Sounds like we’ve got a suspect.”

Together, they searched the village. They checked the old mill, the abandoned barn, and even the duck pond (just in case). No sign of the engine or the watch. Then Tom spotted something glinting in the grass near the riverbank—a small, gold chain. “That’s Mr. Higgins’ watch chain!” he cried.

The constable followed the trail of trampled grass to a narrow path leading out of the village. At the end of it, they found The Iron Duchess hidden behind a thicket, her boiler cold. Beside her, the stranger in the long coat was trying to crank the engine to life. He jumped when he saw them. “I—I can explain!” he stammered.

It turned out the man was Mr. Higgins’ nephew, Albert. He had taken the engine and the watch to prove he could run the fair better than his uncle. “I just wanted to show him I was responsible,” Albert admitted, hanging his head.

Constable Briggs shook his head. “Responsible? You’ve caused a right kerfuffle!” But Mr. Higgins, when he heard the whole story, just sighed. “Family,” he said, clapping Albert on the back. “Bring the engine back, lad, and we’ll talk.”

By afternoon, The Iron Duchess was steaming proudly in the fairground once more. Mr. Higgins even let Albert help run the candyfloss stall. Tom, meanwhile, was given a shiny new shilling for his trouble. As the sun set over Little Marshwick, the fair whistles blew, and the village celebrated—not just the return of the engine, but the solving of a mystery.
