5 cards

When you call to make an appointment, you use special phrases. Here are useful phrases for the phone:

English When to use it
Hello, this is [name]. At the start of a call
Can I speak to [name]? To ask for a person
I'd like to make an appointment. To say why you call
What time is good for you? To ask about a time
Is [day] at [time] okay? To suggest a day and time
I'm free on [day]. To say when you can come
How about [time]? To suggest another time
See you on [day]. At the end of the call

Other useful words for appointments: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (days of the week); morning, afternoon, evening (parts of the day); o'clock, half past, quarter past (times).

Listen to the rhythm of these phrases. They are polite and short. When you speak on the phone, speak clearly and a little slower than in person. Always say your name and the day and time at the end of the call.

How can I help you?"، أنت ترد وتقول اسمك وبعدين السبب. في الإنجليزي، لما تقول اسمك على التليفون، بتقول "This is" قبل الاسم. مثلاً: "Hello, this is Sara." مش بتقول "I am Sara" على التليفون، لأن "this is" هي الصيغة الصح والمعتادة في المكالمات.

تطلب الميعاد

بعد ما تقول اسمك، تقول عايز إيه. الجملة المهمة هنا هي "I'd like to make an appointment, please." لاحظ إن "I'd like" دي اختصار لـ "I would like"، ومعناها "أنا عايز/عايزة بأدب". الجملة دي مهذبة أكتر من "I want"، فدايماً استخدمها لما تتكلم مع ناس في مكان رسمي.

تقول أنت فاضي إمتى

الدكتور أو الموظف هيقولك "What time is good for you?" أو "When are you free?"، وأنت ترد وتقول الأيام اللي فاضي فيها. الجملة اللي هتستخدمها: "I'm free on Tuesday or Wednesday morning."

  • morning = الصبح
  • afternoon = بعد الضهر
  • evening = بالليل

تقترح وقت تاني لو مش مناسب

لو الوقت اللي قالوه مش مناسب ليك، ممكن تقترح وقت تاني باستخدام "How about..." مثلاً: "How about Thursday afternoon?" أو تسأل: "Is Friday at 2 o'clock okay?"

تقفل المكالمة

في الآخر، لازم تتأكد من الميعاد وتقول جملة زي "See you on Wednesday at 10." دي طريقة مهذبة وبسيطة تقفل بيها المكالمة. وبعدين تقول "Goodbye" أو "See you then."

كلمات مهمة لازم تحفظها

  • أيام الأسبوع: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
  • الوقت: o'clock (يعني بالظبط زي 10 o'clock = الساعة عشرة بالظبط)، half past (يعني ونص)، quarter past (يعني ربع)

نصيحة أخيرة

لما تتكلم على التليفون بالإنجليزي، حاول تبقى واضح ومتكلم بهدوء شوية. ومتنساش دايماً تقول اسمك في الأول، واليوم والوقت في الآخر عشان تتأكد إن الميعاد صح.

Listening

Listening

5 cards

You will hear a phone call between Tom Brown and Sarah, a receptionist at City Dental Clinic. Tom is calling to make an appointment for a check-up. Listen carefully for: the day of the appointment, the time of the appointment, and the name on the appointment.

When you listen to a phone call, do not try to understand every word. First, listen for the main idea: why is Tom calling? Then listen again for specific facts: what day? what time? what name?

Before you listen, think: What do you say when you call a doctor's office? What information does the receptionist need from you? You will need your name and to know which days you are free. This will help you understand the call.

After you listen, answer three questions: one about the main idea, one true or false, and one fill in the blank. All answers are in the call.

جو المحادثة

في الدرس ده هتسمع مكالمة تليفون بين Tom Brown، اللي بيتصل، و Sarah، اللي شغالة reception في عيادة أسنان اسمها City Dental Clinic. توم عايز يحجز موعد (make an appointment) عشان يعمل check-up، يعني كشف دوري على أسنانه.

جمل مهمة من المكالمة

تحية Sarah لما ردّت:

Good morning, City Dental Clinic. How can I help you?

ده أسلوب احترافي بتفتح بيه أي موظفة استقبال المكالمة. بتقول اسم المكان وبعدين بتسأل إزاي تقدر تساعد.

تعرّف توم بنفسه:

Hello, this is Tom Brown. I'd like to make an appointment, please.

لما تيجي تتكلم في التليفون، مش بتقول "I am Tom"، لأ، بتقول this is عشان ده اللي بيتقال في المكالمات.

تأكيد نوع الموعد:

Is it for a check-up?

Sarah بتسأل توم لو الموعد ده for a check-up، يعني عشان كشف. الجملة دي شكلها: Is it for + [نوع الكشف]؟

الأيام المتاحة عند توم:

I'm free on Tuesday or Thursday.

  • be free on معناها "فاضي يوم".
  • or بنستخدمها لما عندك أكتر من اختيار.

اقتراح Sarah:

We have Tuesday at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

لاحظ طريقة Sarah بتقول الموعد:

  • at 2 o'clock → الساعة
  • in the afternoon → بعد الضهر (وقت)

رد توم:

Tuesday at 2 o'clock is perfect.

نصايح للاستماع

  • أول مرة اسمع: ركّز بس على الفكرة العامة. ليه توم بيتصل؟ عشان يحجز.
  • تاني مرة اسمع: دوّر على اليوم، الساعة، والاسم.
  • متحاولش تسمع كل كلمة، خد اللي محتاجه بس.

ملخص سريع

الجملة معناها

When you say numbers in English, the syllable stress changes. This is important for dates, ages, and appointments.

Numbers from 13 to 19 end in -teen. The stress is on the second syllable: thirTEEN, fourTEEN, fifTEEN, sixTEEN, sevenTEEN, eighTEEN, nineTEEN.

Numbers 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 end in -ty. The stress is on the first syllable: TWENty, THIRty, FORty, FIFty, SIXty, SEVENty, EIGHty, NINEty.

Look at this small table:

-teen (2nd syllable) -ty (1st syllable)
thirTEEN THIRty
fifTEEN FIFty
eighTEEN EIGHty
nineTEEN NINEty

Listen carefully. The meaning changes with the stress. 'Thirteen' (13) and 'thirty' (30) are different numbers. To produce the stress, push your voice a little harder on the stressed syllable. Make it a little longer and a little higher. Your mouth also opens a little more on the stressed syllable.

-teen numbers: stress on the SECOND syllable (thirTEEN, eighTEEN). -ty numbers: stress on the FIRST syllable (THIRty, EIGHty). Make the stressed syllable a little longer and a little louder.

Strategy: Skimming for key information

When you read a work profile, you do not need to read every word. Read the title and the first sentence of each paragraph. Look for: the person's name, their job, their skills, and how to contact them. This is called skimming.

Here are some key words from the profile you will read:

  • profile (n.): a short text about a person
  • experience (n.): the work someone did before
  • skills (n.): things someone can do well
  • available (adj.): free to work
  • patient (adj.): able to wait calmly
  • weekdays (n.): Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

A work profile is short - usually 50 to 100 words. People use work profiles for jobs, online, and for applications. In the next step, you will read Anna's work profile. Read it quickly. Do not stop for new words. Just look for the key facts: name, job, age, languages, experience, and contact.

After you read, you will answer one question about the main idea and two questions about specific details. All the answers are in the text.

Anna.

Speaking

6 cards

In this section, you will practice making an appointment on the phone. First, listen to a model. Then you will say the phrases. Finally, you will have your own phone call.

Here are the key phrases:

English When to use it
Hello, this is [name]. At the start
I'd like to make an appointment. To say why you call
Is [day] at [time] okay? To suggest a day and time
I'm free on [day]. To say when you can
See you on [day] at [time]. At the end

When you speak on the phone, remember: speak clearly, use the caller's name, and repeat the day and time at the end. This helps the other person understand you.

You will hear a short call between Emma and Tom. Emma works at a dental clinic. Tom wants to make an appointment. Listen for the day and time they choose. Then you will say two key sentences, and finally make your own phone call.

إزاي تعمل appointment بالتليفون

في الـ section دي هنتعلم إزاي تتصل بعيادة أو مكتب وتعمل appointment (موعد). الموقف بسيط: إنت بتتصل، والموظف بيسألك، وإنت بتختار يوم ووقت مناسب ليك. خلينا نشوف الـ phrases اللي هتحتاجها.

الـ phrases الأساسية

  • "Hello, this is [name]." — دي بتقولها في أول المكالمة عشان تعرف الموظف إنت مين. مثال: Hello, this is Sara.
  • "I'd like to make an appointment." — دي عشان تقول إنك عايز تحجز موعد. I'd like to معناها "عايز/حابة" وبتدي إحساس إنك polite.
  • "Is [day] at [time] okay?" — عشان تقترح يوم ووقت. مثال: Is Monday at 9 o'clock okay?
  • "I'm free on [day]." — عشان تقول إنت فاضي إمتى. مثال: I'm free on Tuesday afternoon.
  • "See you on [day] at [time]." — عشان تقفل المكالمة بشكل لطيف.

Grammar نقطتين مهمين

1) I'd like to — دي اختصار لـ I would like to، وبتستخدمها لما عايز تطلب حاجة بشكل polite (مؤدب). في المطارح والمكاتب دايماً أحسن من I want.

2) How can I help you? — سؤال الموظف في الأول. الإجابة الطبيعية تبدأ بـ I'd like to + الفعل.

نصايح للمكالمة

  • اتكلم بوضوح واعلى صوتك شوية لأن التليفون بيبخّت الصوت.
  • اكّرر اليوم والوقت في الآخر عشان تتأكد إن الموظف فاهمك صح. زي ما Tom عمل: See you on Friday at 10.
  • استخدم اسمك في الأول: This is Tom أو This is Sara.

الخطوات اللي هتعملها

هتسمع الأول المكالمة بين Emma و Tom، وبعدين هتسجّل نفسك وأنت بتقول Is Friday at 10 o'clock okay? و I'm free on Monday morning.، وأخيراً هتعمل role-play مع الـ AI كأنك بتتصل فعلاً. خلّي بالك إنك تستخدم I'd like to وقول اسمك في الأول — ده هيخلي كلامك يبقى natural جداً. 🎯

Emma works at City Dental Clinic. Tom calls to make an appointment. Listen to the model call.

  1. E
Emma Good morning, City Dental Clinic. How can I help you?
  2. T

  4. T

  5. E
Emma Yes, we have 10 o'clock on Friday.
  6. T

Writing

Writing

6 cards

In this section, you will write a short work profile. First, read a model. Then you will learn about capital letters. Finally, you will write your own profile and read it aloud.

Here is a model work profile:

My Work Profile My name is Anna Smith. I am 28 years old. I work as a teacher at City Language School. I can speak English and Spanish. I have five years of teaching experience. In my free time, I like reading and swimming. I am available to work on weekdays. You can call me at 555-1234.

Using capital letters Capital letters are big letters. In English, we use capital letters for:

  • The first word of a sentence: My name is Anna.
  • Names of people: Anna, Tom, Smith
  • Days of the week: Monday, Friday
  • Months of the year: January, March
  • The word I (for me)

Capital letters are important in a profile. They make your text easy to read. Look at the model: 'My', 'Anna', 'Smith', 'I', 'City Language School', 'English', 'Spanish'. All use capital letters. Now, write your own work profile. Use the model. Then read it aloud.

في السيكشن ده من الدرس، المطلوب منك إنك تكتب work profile قصير عن نفسك، زي اللي كاتبته Anna في المثال. الفكرة إنك تقدّم نفسك بشكل بسيط ومنظّم، عشان اللي يقرأ الـ profile يعرف مين أنت، بتشتغل إيه، وعندك إيه skills.

الأجزاء اللي المفروض تبقى موجودة في الـ profile بتاعك:

  • Name (الاسم): اسمك كامل، first name و last name. مثلاً: My name is Anna Smith.
  • Age (السن): I am 28 years old.
  • Job (الوظيفة): I work as a teacher at City Language School.
  • Languages (اللغات): I can speak English and Spanish.
  • Experience (الخبرة): I have five years of teaching experience.
  • Hobbies (الاهتمامات): I like reading and swimming.
  • Availability (المواعيد المتاحة): I am available to work on weekdays.
  • Contact (طريقة التواصل): You can call me at 555-1234.

قواعد الـ Capital Letters في الإنجليزي: الحروف الكبيرة ليها استخدامات ثابتة. استخدمها في:

  • أول كلمة في أي جملة: My name is Anna.
  • أسماء الناس: Anna, Tom, Smith.
  • أيام الأسبوع: Monday, Friday.
  • شهور السنة: January, March.
  • كلمة I لما بتتكلم عن نفسك.
  • أسماء اللغات: English, Spanish.
  • أسماء الأماكن والمدارس والشركات: City Language School.

Capital letters are big letters. Use them for: the first word of a sentence, names of people (Anna, Tom), days (Monday, Friday), months (January, March), and the word 'I'. Capital letters make your profile easy to read.

Required

In the model profile, the word 'anna' is written with a capital A.

Required

Which of these words needs a capital letter in your profile?

  • teacher
  • monday
  • school
  • and
Required

Now write your own short work profile (50-70 words). Include: your name, age, job, languages, experience, and one hobby. Use capital letters for names, days, and the first word of each sentence. Then read it aloud here.

Read your own work profile aloud now.
