Welcome to the Unit 5 review! In this unit you talked about films and television, and you practised two important verb tenses: the present simple and the past simple. This short review is your chance to check what you remember before moving on to the next unit.

Films and TV: key vocabulary Here are some of the most useful words from the unit. You can use them to talk about what you watch and what you like.

Present simple — quick recap We use the present simple for habits, routines and things we like. Don't forget the -s with he, she and it.

  • I watch films on Fridays. (I, you, we, they — no -s)
  • She watches films on Fridays. (he, she, it — add -s)
  • They don't like horror films.
  • Do you like comedies?

Past simple — quick recap We use the past simple for things that happened in the past, like yesterday or last weekend. Many verbs are regular (verb + -ed), but some are irregular.

  • I watched a thriller last night.
  • She went to the cinema on Saturday.
  • We didn't see the news.
  • Did you watch the match?

Writing task: a short film or TV review For your writing task this unit, you will write a short review of a film or a TV programme you watched recently. Say what it is, who is in it, what happens, and whether you liked it. Aim for five to seven sentences.

Using opinion adjectives A great way to make your writing more interesting is to use opinion adjectives like brilliant, boring, exciting, funny or terrible. Try to put one in almost every sentence: 'It's a brilliant film.' 'The ending was terrible.' This gives the reader a clear feeling about your opinion.

مراجعة الوحدة الخامسة: أفلام وتلفزيون

في الوحدة دي اتكلمنا عن حاجة الناس كلها بتحبها — الأفلام والبرامج التلفزيونية. وكمان درسنا زمنين مهمين جداً في الإنجليزي: المضارع البسيط (present simple) والماضي البسيط (past simple). تعالوا نراجعهم بسرعة.

الأول: المضارع البسيط (Present Simple)

بنستخدم المضارع البسيط لما نتكلم عن عادات وروتين، يعني حاجات بنعملها بانتظام. وكمان بنستخدمه لما نقول إيه اللي بنحبه أو مش بنحبه.

القاعدة المهمة: بنضيف -s لما الفاعل يكون he أو she أو it.

  • I watch series every evening. (أنا بشوف مسلسلات كل مساء)
  • She watches thrillers on weekends. (هي بتشوف أفلام إثارة في الويك إند)
  • They don't like horror films. (هم مش بيحبوا أفلام الرعب)
  • Do you like comedies? (إنت بتحب الأفلام الكوميدية؟)

التاني: الماضي البسيط (Past Simple)

بنستخدم الماضي البسيط لما نحكي عن حاجات حصلت قبل كده، زي إمبارح أو last weekend.

الأفعال العادية (regular verbs) بنزودلها -ed في الآخر:

  • watch → watched (شفت)
  • like → liked (حبيت)

بس في أفعال شاذة (irregular verbs) لازم تحفظها، زي:

  • go → went (روحت)
  • see → saw (شفت)
  • do → did (عملت)

مثال: I watched a brilliant thriller last Friday. أو Did you see the match?

المفردات المهمة (Key Vocabulary)

من الكلمات اللي اتعلمتها، جرب تحطها في جمل:

  • thriller — فيلم فيه توتر وإثارة
  • documentary — فيلم عن ناس أو أحداث حقيقية
  • chat show — برنامج حوار على التلفزيون
  • animation — فيلم متعمل بالرسم أو الكمبيوتر

مهمة الكتابة: اكتب ريفيو!

المطلوب منك تكتب ريفيو قصير (خمس لسبع جمل) عن فيلم أو برنامج اتفرجت عليه قريب. اكتب:

  1. إيه هو الفيلم أو البرنامج
  2. مين بيمثل فيه
  3. إيه اللي بيحصل فيه (القصة)
  4. هل حبيته ولا لأ — ودي النقطة المهمة!

الصفات اللي تعبّر عن رأيك (Opinion Adjectives)

عشان كتابتك تبقى شيقة وحقيقية، استخدم صفات رأي في كل جملة تقريباً:

  • brilliant — رائع وممتاز
  • boring — ممل
  • exciting — مثير ومشوّق
  • funny — مضحك
  • terrible — فظيع وحش

مثال: "It's a brilliant film. The ending was terrible though!" — شايف إزاي الصفات دي بتدي للقارئ إحساس قوي برأيك؟

Here's a model sentence for your writing task. Notice the past simple verb 'watched' and the opinion adjectives 'brilliant', 'exciting' and 'scary'.

PREPARE — Before you write, gather your ideas. Think about:

• What is the name of the film or TV programme? • Who are the main actors? • What is the story about? (in 1-2 sentences) • When and where did you watch it? • Did you like it? Why or why not?

Choose at least two opinion adjectives to describe it: brilliant, boring, exciting, funny, scary, terrible.

WRITE — Now write your short review. Aim for 5–7 sentences.

Try this structure:

  1. 'Last [day] I watched …' (past simple — when)
  2. 'It's a [type] film/programme.' (present simple — what it is)
  3. 'It stars …' (present simple — the actors)
  4. 'The story is about …' (present simple — what happens)
  5. 'I [watched / liked / didn't like] it because it's …' (past simple + opinion adjective) 6–7. Add one or two more sentences with more opinion adjectives.

Remember to use capital letters at the start of every sentence and for the names of people and films.

REVIEW — Now check your writing. Read your review again and ask yourself:

✓ Did I use the past simple for the story? (watched, went, saw, was, liked) ✓ Did I add -s to he/she/it verbs in the present simple? (watches, likes, goes) ✓ Did I use at least two opinion adjectives? (brilliant, boring, funny, exciting, terrible, scary) ✓ Did I use capital letters correctly at the start of sentences and for names? ✓ Is every sentence a complete sentence with a subject and a verb?
