Now it is time to use these new words in a real conversation. When we talk about our social media habits in English, we usually start with a general statement and then add a few details. A good first sentence is something likeI'm on Instagram quite a lot or I don't really use social media that much. These general answers help the other person understand if you are a heavy or a light user.
After your first sentence, you can add a frequency. Common frequency words and phrases are: every day, most days, a few times a week, once in a while and hardly ever. For example: I check Instagram a few times a week or I post almost every day. These phrases sound natural and show that you can talk about routines in a British English way.
Then you can give one or two details to keep the conversation going. Useful follow-up sentences are: I follow my friends and a few celebrities, I share a lot of videos of my dog, I like to watch cooking videos, I usually comment on my close friends' posts and I never post stories. Try to be honest and specific – real-life details make the conversation feel true. Even small details, likeI like cute animal videos, are perfect.
You will also need to ask questions back. Good questions to ask are: What about you?, Do you use [platform]?, How often do you post?, What do you like to watch? and Who do you follow? Keep your questions short and friendly. In British English, we often use rising intonation on yes/no questions: Do you like TikTok?
Listen to the dialogue below and notice the rhythm. Each person makes a short statement, asks a small question, and the other person answers with another short statement. Don't try to use long, complex sentences. Three or four short sentences in a natural voice are much better than one very long, perfect sentence. The most important thing is to keep the conversation going – mistakes are normal, and people will understand you anyway.

Social media is a big part of daily life for many people around the world. We use it to keep in touch with friends, follow our interests, share news and find funny videos. To talk about social media in English, you need a small set of useful verbs and nouns. In this lesson, you will learn eight important words that appear again and again when people talk about their online habits.
The first group of words is actions – the things we do on social media. The verb post means to put your own photo, video or message online. We also use it as a noun: I saw your post about the cat. The verb share means to send someone else's content to your own friends, or to send a private message.Like is one of the most common verbs – it means to click the small heart or thumbs-up icon to show you enjoy something.Comment is both a verb and a noun: you write a reply under someone's post, and the reply itself is also called a comment. Finally, follow means to subscribe to another person's updates, so their new posts appear in your feed automatically.
The second group of words is things – the nouns we use to describe the different parts of social media. An account is the personal page you create with your email and password. Most people have a personal account and a work account. Your profile is the part of your account that shows your name, photo and information about you. When you change your profile picture, everyone can see the new photo. A story is a short post – usually a photo or a short video – that disappears after 24 hours. Stories are very popular on Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook.
