The Story

The Disappearing Dalesman

The Last Morning

Tom Hardwick had worked Swaledale Farm for thirty years. Every morning at six o’clock sharp, his old Land Rover rattled down the track, and his border collie, Bess, trotted at his heels. But on Tuesday, the engine didn’t start. Tom muttered, “Bloody thing,” and walked the last mile to the top field instead. He left his half-finished tea on the kitchen table and a scribbled note: “Back by nine—weather looks fair.”

At nine, Bess began to whine. By ten, she was howling at the gate. Neighbouring farmer Meg Riley heard the noise and came to investigate. She found the note, the cooling tea, and a crumpled napkin with numbers scrawled in pencil: 54.3826° N, 2.1597° W. “That’s Black Moss Tarn,” Meg said aloud. “Why on earth would Tom go there in November?”

The Search

Meg phoned the mountain rescue team. Within an hour, volunteers were combing the dales. They checked every barn and dry-stone wall. They called Tom’s mobile, but it rang from the pocket of his waxed jacket, still hanging on the back of the kitchen door. The coordinates led them to a lonely tarn fringed with reeds. The water was black and still. A single boot print pressed into the mud suggested someone had stood there, but there was no sign of Tom.

Constable Patel arrived with a thermal drone. As the drone skimmed the heather, Meg noticed something glinting near the tarn’s edge. She waded through the reeds and pulled out a small metal tin. Inside was a key and a scrap of paper: “If I don’t return, open the old bothy.”

The Bothy Secret

The bothy stood half a mile away, its slate roof sagging under years of snow. The key turned with a rusty groan. Inside, Meg found a paraffin lamp, a camp bed, and a shelf of notebooks. Each page was filled with Tom’s neat handwriting—weather records, sheep counts, and, on the last page, a confession. “I saw something strange last summer,” he had written. “A light over the tarn. I think it was a signal. Tonight, I’m going back to find out.”

Outside, the drone’s camera suddenly flickered. A heat signature appeared near the tarn—then vanished. Meg ran back, Bess barking at her side. There, by the water’s edge, was Tom’s flat cap, damp with dew. Beside it, freshly carved into the bark of a rowan tree, were the words: “Gone home.”

No one ever saw Tom Hardwick again. But sometimes, when the mist rolls low over Swaledale, walkers swear they hear a collie’s bark and the distant chug of an old Land Rover.
