Welcome to Unit 4 Review! This unit was about food, countable and uncountable nouns, and quantifiers. In this review, you practice all of these things again.

Food words: We learned many food words. We can put them in groups: fruit (apple, banana, orange), vegetables (carrot, potato), drinks (water, milk, juice), and other food (rice, bread, egg, chicken). Some food words are countable (apple, egg, orange) — we can count them: one apple, two apples. Other food words are uncountable (rice, water, milk) — we cannot count them. We use them without a number: some rice, some water.

Quantifiers: Quantifiers are small words for amounts. We use some in positive sentences. We use any in negative sentences and questions. We use many with countable nouns (How many apples?). We use much with uncountable nouns (How much milk?). We use a lot of with both. We also learned a few (countable) and a little (uncountable).

Your writing task: Write a shopping list for one week of food. Group the food into 4 categories: fruit, vegetables, drinks, and other food. Use quantifiers to say how much you need.

Using a list: Start each item with a capital letter. Put a bullet point or a number in front of each item. Keep each item short — just a name and a number. Don't use full sentences in a list.

  • أكل تاني (other food): rice، bread، egg، chicken

Countable و Uncountable

دي من أهم الحاجات في الوحدة:

  • Countable nouns: الأسماء اللي نقدر نعدّها زي apple و egg و orange، عشان كده بنقول one apple أو two apples أو three eggs.
  • Uncountable nouns: الأسماء اللي مش بنعدّها زي rice و water و milk، فبنقول some rice أو some water من غير أرقام.

كلمات الكمية (Quantifiers)

دي الكلمات الصغيرة اللي بتقول بيها الكمية:

  • some: بنستخدمها في الجمل الموجبة (I want some apples)
  • any: بنستخدمها في الجمل المنفية والأسئلة (I don't have any milk / Do you have any eggs?)
  • many: مع الأسماء القابلة للعدّ (How many apples do you want?)
  • much: مع الأسماء الغير قابلة للعدّ (How much rice do you need?)
  • a lot of: مع الاتنين (a lot of apples / a lot of water)
  • a few: مع countable (a few bananas)
  • a little: مع uncountable (a little milk) — زي الجملة النموذجية: I want some apples and a little rice, please

Read and listen to this example sentence with quantifiers.

PREPARE — Before you write, think about these questions: What fruit do you eat every week? What vegetables do you need? What drinks do you buy? How much rice or bread do you eat? Write your ideas on paper first. Make a list of 8 to 10 food items for one week.

WRITE — Now write your shopping list. Use 4 sections: Fruit, Vegetables, Drinks, Other food. In each section, write the food items with quantifiers. Examples: 3 apples, some water, a few eggs, a little sugar, a lot of rice. Use capital letters for every food name. Use numbers for countable things.

REVIEW — Check your list with these questions. Did I use capital letters for every food? Did I use some and any correctly? Did I use many with countable nouns and much with uncountable nouns? Do I have 4 sections? If you answer yes to all these, your list is great!
